What's a closed back option compared to the shp9500's?

Mcr240You won't get this sound quality even for $200. The ATH M50 is almost comparable, but much more colored.

Mcr240@dalethorn is right. the difference between closed back and open back is that you'll get a more natural wide soundstage with open back. with closed back, you can buy headphones that have a simulated wide soundstage but because it is usually digitally reproduced, it will may end up ruining the EQ of the music/audio files you're listening to. JBL has a simulated version though it's not even close to the price. i would say look for something with a much different sound signature to complement this headphone rather than replicate it. you're going to end up killing yourself over small differences if you try to replicate it and you'll end up hating both headphones. I hope that helps a bit, I'm not so much an audiophile but i just really like headphones and I like sharing whatever i've learned with others! Cheers!

nigelsequeiraThe soundstage on the shp9500 isn't as wide as I expected. iirc the SHP9000 was better in this regard.

AnjanakrishnanIt'll widen after the initial burn in period. The drivers need to loosen up, which will give it smoother and lower lows and clearer mids and highs. I've yet to receive mine but that's just my experience with all my headphones.

nigelsequeiraThe soundstage with this SHP-9500 amazed me with how spacious it is. Anyone who is disappointed with that, I don't have a good guess unless their sample isn't up to spec. Mine I'd say is well above average for good open headphones, never mind the cheap ones. Not in the HD800 class, but still very good. The AKG K553 sold here has an excellent soundstage for a closed headphone, again punching well above its price range, but the difference between it and the open Philips gets more obvious with longer listening - the Philips just has more of that "airy" kind of sound you'd expect of a decent open-back (but don't always get).

nigelsequeiraVery true. I remember reading some opinions that burn-in usually makes very little difference, but it almost always makes big changes for me. Even 2 or 3 db here and there can make a huge difference since the drivers adjust where they need to, not where a user might expect.
