Just get the DT1990 pros and be much happier while saving hundreds.
I actually would like to hear the monitor 5 headphones. I have a lot of respect for the speaker drivers developed under collaboration of Pioneer/TAD/Air studios. I wonder if Andrew Jones had a hand in the development of the headphones. Would not be surprised if technology was developed in house. The master 1 has an odd spike in the mid/treble. Has anyone seen the frequency response for the monitor 5? Some users have expressed really enjoying these headphones. Would not dismiss these without consideration.
Pioneer is renowned yes, but when it comes to headphones, they are not exactly competitive. Sure the build is nice, but when you can get the M Audio HDH50, which is also well built, while offering much better sound for a much lower price, what exactly is the extra several hundred dollars getting you?
Note the spike at 6kHz, the bass rolloff starting at 100Hz, and that absurd harmonic distortion. A poor show by any measure, and it is utterly laughable that a "renowned" manufacturer would charge hundreds of dollars for that.
Reading some negative comments here and wanted to share my experience. I owned the SE-MONITOR5 for a couple weeks and they are very nice headphones. The build quality is ridiculously good - these are so well made beautiful cans. Sound is flat-ish/reference with great controlled/tight bass and the isolation is excellent. Comfort is incredible on them and the velour ear pads literally feel like sweet soft pillows on your ears. These even come with a balanced cable which made them sound exceptional on my FiiO X7Mk2. The reason I had to part with them is because they were a bit heavy for me @ 480grams and I couldn't use them for the long sessions that I'm accustomed to. Otherwise, these are a great buy! They do not use MMCX connectors either, standard 2.5mm mono. Great cans and a steal at this price if you're shopping for a closed back can. Build quality - check. Sound quality - check. IF you can deal with the weight, they are a buy.

A steal at 800 buck?....That's laughable!
OK maybe not a steal but you get a fair amount for it imo. Maybe a DT1770 would be a better deal, idk or something else out there but I could see someone enjoying these allot and the price is fair imo.
I'll give you $2000 for the ability to hear 85,000 hrz.
I have the SE-MASTER1 as part of a bundle for an amp. They're like a weird merge between the TH-900 and the HD800: bassy, airy, v-signature, and slightly sibilant depending on the amp. Not recommended: for this price you can do a lot better. Also, they use MMCX connectors that you find on IEMs for a full sized headphone. Even though the cable is technically removable, it's hard to find any non-IEM MMCX cable that fits securely.
I would bet money that they use Fostex drivers.
Is that a typo or does the SE-MONITOR5 really only go down to 50 Hz?
Bookmarked for when I win the lottery.
Hard to shell out $2.500 for a headphone sold by an unknown vendor when it can be bought on Amazon for the same price...

Ahan... but what the hell? They not sourcing these from them? That doesn't make sense.
They always source stuff from the manufacturer or at least a reliable vendor. How do we even know it's not a reliable vendor though? Don't think Massdrop is gonna risk that now.

Though at this price, I think we're indifferent about this drop. Also, at this price, there's already Massdrop's own Focals and so many other more better options to go for.

These Pioneers have clearly nothing going for them. Anyways, it's one more addition to the broad range of cans you could drop... This one's just for the title I guess.
Recall the controversies about when Massdrop had the Chord Mojo... in the past at least, Massdrop has not always sourced from manufacturers.
Can Massdrop simply split it into 2 items? So confusinf
Uhm, this is more or less the retail price for the MASTER1 if I'm not mistaken?
