How do these compare to jbl speakers specifically lsr305. Does Dolby Atmos really make a big difference?

Kenny1109This line of Pioneer speakers have actually won a few awards for design and sound quality when it first came out. they are now including add on for Atmos (this being one of them). If your receiver is Atmos ready and you can get content for Atmos (not too much out there right now) it does make a difference. These speakers are for people who don't want to install speakers in the ceiling. Atmos is designed to give you ambient sounds from the ceiling down. This pair is for side or rear speakers not for front (though I guess you could but its not ideal). hope that helps

Kalif0rniaYou might be able to answer my question: I am debating on buying the Andrew Jones set (SP-PK52FS) that originally comes with the two floor-standing fronts, a center channel, two bookshelf rears and a sub. I would be perfectly fine with subbing this in, in place of the bookshelf rears? Would I also HAVE to add the Atmos add-ons for the floor standing fronts? Or would it be fine to just have these in the rear? Just curious as well as to why these wouldn't be ideal for front L/R? Not enough power?

UberAlecSo I actually bought the set you are describing a year ago, it was on sale at Amazon in a 5.1 package. thats why I bought these on the drop yesterday to add on to make 7.1 w/ rear Atmos. I'm planning on moving the rears that came in the set to the sides and using this new Atmos as my rear speakers. I have a Sofa table behind my . . . well sofa and am planning on moving my old rear speaker to the edges facing at an angle in (to give me my side speaker result) and placing these Atmos speakers directly behind for rears. A 7.1 surround with rear Atmos if you will. I plan on updating to those add ons you talked about for the front eventually, but I want to try these out first.

Kenny1109With equalization, they'll sound nearly identical. The JBLs will dig a little deeper and they're also powered (which is appropriate for a studio monitor). But you're talking about two, different classes of speaker.
I've worked w/ a number of Dolby engineers and they've all reported that home atmos is pretty convincing, compared to cinema CP850 processing. That said, if you're going to go this route (i.e. bouncing sound off of your ceiling), you need to factor in a few things (time alignment being the big one and whatever funkiness your ceiling happens to add to the frequency response).

UberAlecIf you’ve already got front floor standing speakers and rear surround speakers why would you be looking to replace them? If you want Atmos without installing front ceiling speakers then you can look at buying dedicated up firing speakers placed on existing front floor standings...the jury is out on how well any of these work though.
