Calling it "universal" got my hopes up that it would be a region-free player, but not so. The specs don't list a region, but you can see the "A" on the back image.

pickelsurpriseUniversal refers to the type of discs it can play. Any player released in North America is region A locked. There is an DVD region hack for Pioneer players that’s easy to find on the internet. Blu-ray‘s would need a hardware upgrade. UHD’s are all region free.

SwampySo ships internationally but cannot play discs from local region without a hardware mod. SO many drops I am interested in lately need to go via a freight forwarder (add $$$) for international shipping, or are like this - will ship but no point! Massdrop strikes again...

JaredOfOzAgreed Massdrop could do a better job when it comes to international shipping. I don’t think you can blame Massdrop for region coding. It’s a US based company that offers US approved equipment. The region coding nonsense is due to greedy Hollywood studios. If you want to blame someone, blame them, not Massdrop.

SwampyYes, for sure region coding is not Massdrops fault. My issue is more Massdrop make these sort of drops available for International shipping (and others with only US power options or region coding) generally where the only reason you know it is not suitable is some knowledgeable person (like you) makes a comment in the Discussion tab. Massdrop description has vague comments like "Universal" which implies it will be fine but if you buy it end up with a boat anchor - while (the majority of) stuff that would be fine for OS members is not made available as too hard to ship Internationally (apparently).
Thanks to you/@pickelsurprise for pointing out the region lock to US as I was looking at grabbing one, but can get a similar local unit for nearly the same price as having this one plus modifying to work here (voiding warranty). "Universal" and 'ships internationally' made me think it was a good deal, turns out it is not... :-(
