IMHO 40% (and for that matter 60%) boards would gain more acceptance if there was a stupid easy reliable GUI app for modifying the layout.
I know >.< this much about keyboard electronics but if makers out there could come together with a standard chipset they all agreed to use then a cross platform app should be pretty easy to put together.
I know ... less hacker ... more hipster ... but the more people you get on board the more diverse styles of keysets you will see for this; again IMHO.

I would officially endorse these, but I haven't been able to test them out fully, so I'm be bad at providing support for them!
But yeah, these are definitely options, and I'm hoping to build a web-based one soon!

It's not the official firmware. Jack has a TMK fork that has been modified for the Planck. You can do much more with the TMK based firmware, if you spend the time.
Though for keyboard/mouse mapping Easy AVR is pretty complete, and the author continues to add features.
