As someone now new to the Mechkeys movement, yet has been around the IT world for over 20 years; would this with Cherry MX Brown's be the best of both worlds as I assume? I've used all types of keyboards and for the last several years have had the Logitech G510 (which is not mech, not loud and lacks much suitable tactile feel) I'm wondering the curve for this Planck w/ MX Browns would be too much for this old dog, lol.
I game but also code and possibly may develop a collection to do either or at any one time but really loved the old style mechanicals back in the day but just not with the clicky/clank so much. Thinking browns give me best 'middle of the road' compared to say a more clicky Blue or mushy Red. Viable?

IctinikeViable, certainly. Clears or zealios have a more pronounced bump feeling than browns, so some prefer it. Some find the clears to have springs that are too heavy, so they will replace the springs (referred to as ergo clears). This went into the consideration when it came to zealio building.
That said, I'm making a handwired brown board, and am getting this Planck to put Greens in, so there's no wrong answer to personal feelings

IctinikeThe Cherry MX Browns are a good place to start. They are light, but still have a bit of tactility. I find I can type very quickly and accurately on them.
I like the feel of Gateron Browns even better, however. The tactile bump is more pronounced and earlier in the stroke than on Cherry Browns. I find that the earlier feedback on the Gaterons allow me to type even faster and more accurately than on Cherry Browns. The one down side of the Gateron Browns, however, is that they are louder on bottoming out. So they can be quite clacky in a quiet room.
I personally find Cherry MX Clears to feel too springy and heavy. Actually, they feel better on a board with a heavy, solid aluminum case, like the Poker 3. But they feel heavy and springy on my KBP V60, which has a plastic case. There's just not enough snap, there. I, for one, am not a huge fan of stock Clears for that reason.
Matias Quiet Clicks are very nice. They are very quiet, and I would not hesitate to use them taking notes in class with them. They do have a slightly cushioned/damped feel that some folks do not like. But they do have a nice, pronounced tactile feel. Oddly, while they work for me most of the time, every so often I feel that the cushioned feel on bottoming out throws off my cadence, and my speed and accuracy drop off greatly. I need to switch to Browns in those cases. Still, these are one of my favorites for the quietness and the nice tactility. Of course, replacement key sets are much, much more limited for Matias/Alps switches if that will be important to you.
Blues can be nice for the pronounced and audible click. But they are loud. I find I don't use my Blue boards anymore for the noise. Plus I HATE the feel if Cherry MX Blues. They have a gritty feel to the sliders that makes for a very sandy feeling key stroke. In some cases, this grittiness results in a lot of friction. On keys off to the side, where it's hard to press the key straight down, this friction can stack up and it feels like the key is binding. It feels like you are pressing against sand with molasses in it, and you have to press those keys twice as hard to get them down. You can see how this can trip up your timing when you're fingers should be flying. This if for Cherry MX Blues. I find Greetech Blues do not have this gritty feel and are what I'd expect Blues to feel like (I have not tried other makes of Blues than Cherry and Greetech).
For this drop I'm going with the Zealios. I think they will be the best of both worlds, though I have not tried them yet. I am quite optimistic, however.
Of course, there is no one right solution for everyone. It largely comes down to personal preference. But the Browns are a great place to start, IMO.

K.T.NThanks for all the replies! I was looking at some Cherry MX 'Tester' boards that have one of each type from Amazon. It seems logical and I may try to do this before the drop ends. This way I can test them, albeit limited to a single key, and try to form an opinion from that.
Thanks all for the input!

IctinikeI'd recommend the matias quiet click switches if you want a mechanical switch that is very quiet - I find them quieter than browns due to the dampened slider (two bits of rubber at the end soften it) and way more tactile, it feels alot crisper than MX browns and the tactlessness is closer to the top. Also alot closer to the old mechanical keyboards as the switches are a clone/copy of the old Alps simpified switches that were used heavily then.

tehidiotLikewise, I can't recommend Matias QCs highly enough. Absolutely love the high bump and dampened bottom-out

K.T.NJust as a note, there are adapters you can buy for Alps style switches (Matias) to make them compatible with Cherry-compatible keycaps. This is the one I've seen: http://www.shapeways.com/product/LPA7AYPYV I can't comment on the quality of them as I've never used them, but I have seen people say they work well, though they add a bit of height to caps and perhaps a slight bit of wobble to the keys

Ictinikei got into mechs about a year ago, and thought mx browns would be a good middle ground to start with. I was actually pretty dissapointed, as for typing i found the tactility severely lacking. They are great for gaming, but for typing i switched to a Matias Clicky keyboard, which is rather loud though. I am now going to get a Matias Quiet Click Planck as i have read multiple times that the Quiet Click has tactility comparable to the clickys, which I personally find very satisfying.
In short: I recommend you go for the Matias Quiet Click switches

OozekipI am actually typing this Post on a KBP V60 with Matias Clicky Switches & those adapters with PBT DSA keycaps, and they work perfectly! just keep in mind that the keycaps will be a bit higher, but i like the way it looks

VoodaGodThanks for the replies! I've decided to go for the Preonic but will stay here for discussions! One last question I have is that using those Matias Quiet-Click switches we must add in additional $19 for the blank PBT ones as we cannot use the default OEM blanks; correct?
