Genre-Bending Art Books

From Press Otherwise, a small press in Portland, Oregon, these limited-edition books combine photography, art, and the written word to great effect. Home for an Hour tells the story of seven couples as they each spend an hour alone in the same apartment. Photographer Sarah Martin took each couple’s portrait when they arrived and again when they left. In the time between, writer Jacob Paul penned an imagined account of the couple’s unseen actions from a party across the street, which the couple joined at the hour’s end. The second book, Feed Mayonnaise to Tuna, is the product of a month-long installation called Blue Sky Inside. Patrons “blue-skied” an idea by writing it on a tag, attaching the tag to a balloon, and floating the balloon toward the building’s blue ceiling. When the ideas descended, they were displayed on the walls and naturally influenced other patrons’ ideas. The book is an essayistic exploration of the conversations and interior monologues that happened.

About the Press

Press Otherwise produces works that are unbounded by genre or medium. Its books are projects that occupy the spaces in between experiential art and literature, image and text, content and form, new aesthetics and politics, sound and language, individual and collaborative, etc. The loose-knit collective formed to help one other make and publish works that otherwise would not have had a home, and whose hard-to-categorize, hard-to-contain forms could not have been otherwise. As makers and sharers of art, they wish to always be learning, as this is how boundaries are pushed and peripheries are explored, inhabited, allowed to bloom. They make works (largely in the form of books) and share these objects with others, while also trying to avoid hierarchies, rigidities, and the confines of any other tediums.
