Outbound_JesseIt was $35+$3.75 shipping. It seems to come up every couple of months. I've almost pulled the trigger twice in the past, I couldn't pass it up this last time. I'm pretty excited about it. I plan on ordering the Kovea Propane tank converter for it (green Coleman cans), esp now that I've learned how to refill those cans.
I just received an email saying my lantern has shipped (1/10/19) well ahead of the expected ship date of 1/22/19. I'm excited because I didn't expect to get it before a campout planned for next weekend, now it's looking like I'll have it.
Thanks Massdrop.
For me, I wouldn't bring an LED lantern when backpacking. I bring a headlamp (great for keeping your hands free when you need light), and a single-AAA LED light that is super small, and I can tie off to the roof of my tent to provide some soft light for getting ready for bed, etc. I have some Black Diamond LED lanterns that I bring car-camping, but I just can't justify the weight or bulk when backpacking (headlamp and small flashlight/torch cover my needs for light).
This Primus lantern really is a luxury item for me when it's going to be COLD and can't have a fire (Southern California mountains). It just creates a nice ambiance and gives off some comforting heat.
On a related note, I've seen some people discussing the Bulin alternative to the Primus. I bought one (as I was waiting for my Massdrop order for a Primus to be filled), and was mildly impressed with it. Ultimately I returned it and waited for the Primus, and I am glad I did. Night and day difference in build quality. And light output seems greater with the Primus, probably due to the more open mesh around the mantle.
What's the runtime on a 220g cart? How does this work in the cold (near or below freezing)?

xdmkiiSome time ago, I found a claim that the Primus lantern runs 6-12 hours on a 220g canister. In short, from my personal experience with one since then, it all depends how dim you run it but I think that range is stretched too long. More light/heat=higher consumption rate. I've never tried running a new canister for duration testing. The mantle is the same as those on propane lanterns, only smaller, and is not affected so much by colder temperatures as the canisters are. Low temp use depends on the canister blend. I haven't used mine below about 35°F. Really I prefer the quiet of my candle lantern to the hiss of these, but mantle lamps produce more light.
