I haven't seen this jacket back up here in over a year, this time around I think I'll pull the trigger. My one big reservation now, howeeve, is that I read on Trailspace Reviews, a site I trust a lot, that the fabric being so lightweight and thin the jacket itself is fragile. If I were to only use this shell in the rain hiking I'm sure that would be fine, but with skiing (love that helmet compatible hood) I'm worried I'd rip the fabrics quickly

m0arpheusI think it's meant more for Ultralight Hiking and not really for skiing, but I may be wrong. And if you find yourself skiing in it, just dont fall.

GoGoGreenGiantWhat would be a better alternative for something equally lightweight, or close, equally good at shedding water/snow but also that's appropriate for intense skiing?

m0arpheusIt's suitable for skiing, but it's still ultralight. So any serious tumbles or stacks around rocks will kill it.
Again, if you want something that's gonna last don't go ultralight.
I had this jacket for around 2+ years and it's been relegated to my everyday beater now that the sleeves have lots of wear and scratches and the shoulder seam isn't perfect anymore.
Used primarily for hiking/biking/climbing.
I wish they made it pack into its own pocket though...

TeliosAny recommendations on lightweight, as breathabp as possible ski jackets that are helmet compatible?

m0arpheusYou might want to consider the Outdoor Research Realm jacket. It's almost a perfect shell for touring and has a helmet-compatible hood.

gnarlygauchoThanks for the recommendation. Why do you say it's nearly perf for touring?

m0arpheusThe Realm is a fully waterproof shell that is almost a combination of a hardshell and softshell. It breathes extremely well (doesn't even include pit zips). It borders on ultralight (less than 11 oz), but is built to be more durable and abrasion resistant than say the OR Helium. It compresses small enough so that one could easily throw it in the bottom of a pack. It only has chest pockets, so no hand pockets to get in the way of a waistbelt. For skiing, the Realm would be great for touring. For the resort, i.e. when weight is less of a concern than durability, a true hardshell would probably be a better choice.
