Finally got around to assembling this. First and foremost: joystick is crap. I'm not sure why I would ever need the speakers considering HDMI audio out, but meh - adds some heft. I've ordered a Sanwa joystick and encoder since it doesn't look like I can get the 5-pin to work on this encoder. I think there is enough room to get things going - we'll see. Otherwise not a bad kit... just wish they'd spent the money for quality parts for newbies in this space like me.

I have mixed feelings when it comes to this drop. Both in terms of what I received and how the drop was packaged/sold.
First off let me talk about the kit itself. The kit is of moderate build quality at best. The buttons and joystick feel cheap and the joystick is very loud as it clicks around the dial. That being said, they all work, so no issue there. The instructions are minimal and not in sync with the current parts of the project. The video online was helpful but again does not quite match the actual parts contained in this kit. With some basic logic and a little problem solving however, my son (8 years) and I were able to build it in about an hour. It was a fun little project for us. The kit was missing the cap to one of the long screws that holds it together, however, the 4 other screws are enough to hold it together, just bummed i have an extra empty hole in the top of the unit. There were also a couple of heat sinks included in the package that figured no where in the instructions nor video so i wasnt sure how to install them, therefore i didnt...hope it doesn't overheat!
I do believe you could build a better quality kit yourself if you do some research online, and probably for less money, however this was way more convenient.
MASSDROP! here is where my major issue lies with this drop. They included an optional kit for soldering iron as an option on this drop. This made me assume that a soldering iron would be needed for the kit...however the kit was totally plug and play. Because i didn't have a soldering iron I opted for the addon which to my dismay was never needed. I feel duped and ripped off by this move by massdrop. Shady business practices like this (the optional addon should have clearly stated that it was NOT needed for this project) will keep me from buying from massdrop in the future.

All of the parts were decent quality. Instructions online were accurate and easy to follows for the mechanical bits. the only thing I would suggest is better visuals and instructions on the wiring of the buttons to the board - the images hide the mapping and there are no clear instructions in the doc. Also note re the wiring, when you run through the setup the wizard maps the inputs so I guess its not a huge deal but you have to get past the assembly to figure that bit out!
The joystick is kinda basic its just 4 microswitches for up/down and left/right so you won't get for instance moving up and to the left at the same time. You would need a different joystick for that - iirc those are hall effect or some other type of sensor.
Over-all This is a nice kit ;) Very good for people starting out as there is no soldering or customization of the wiring to get it assembled. Check your stash of game binaries - I have had a difficult time finding them due to a variety of issues ( take-downs and abandoned / bad links )

The instructions are laughably bad. They skip important steps. You have to program the SD card yourself, which is disappointing.
The final step of getting the enclosure closed with 5 screws is pretty tricky. I figured out you can pop out the buttons and guide the cylinders with you fingers.
The buttons are a little on the cheap side. The joystick feels nice though.

The Raspberry Pi Retro Arcade DIY Kit was slightly disappointing for the following: 1) Instructions are terrible. It takes a bit to "decode" what you need to do. The internet helped a lot here. 2) Was missing one of the screw to hold the boz together. Since it is a "specialty" type screw, it is not readily replaceable. Fortunately 4 out of 5 screws is enough to adequately hold box together. 3) the price on Massdrop wasn't a deal from what you could get online. Returns through Massdrop are not simple so an online purchase may have been better (could have got replacement screws, etc) 4) having trouble with controls but it may be the way I set up the software configuration. Again.....better instructions would have been nice.
Bubba2UI can't post review cuz I didn't purchase this item I was very disappointed that the advertisement for this device which appeared on Facebook with a button to the Mass drop. Com website needed to place the order later indicated you have to pay extra for the raspberry board. The original Facebook advertisement show it images of the controller with the raspberry bored as an all-inclusive. Quite frankly nothing other than false advertisement asking additional $35 to get the board which was to be assumed included as marketing. Would love to know which 150 games are included. how can I include those games without the raspberry board which you have to pay extra for. Sorry it's the only reply I just jumped on somebody's Post in reply to vent.

The one thing i would change is to add another 2 buttons to make a better fight controller.

Would have gotten 5 stars but one of the screws included was bent. Agree with other comments about instructions not being written well, especially for installing the fight stick.

Excellent quality parts, instructions aren’t the best, but assembly’s pretty self-explanatory.

I went in blind knowing nothing about retropi but I was familiar with MAME and I have a love of fightsticks so I thought this was a pretty neat item. Once you really get into the retropi hobby you realize this is a pretty basic setup with cheap parts. It is good for someone that wants a simple all-in-one solution but not for me. If this came with sanwa parts it would help justify the price.
