I used to race cars. When racing, I kept hearing stories about people who were wearing polarized sun glasses, and didn't see the little glare on the track that indicated that there was spilled oil or coolant. The stories always had a very entertaining middle about the spin, skid, and multiple impacts. Always laughed at the stories, until I got to experience one myself. Hit an aerosol of coolant and oil in the braking zone at the end of a long straight, where someone's engine had grenaded. I didn't understand why the guys in front of me were taking such stupidly slow lines into the corner. (They were avoiding the glare that I didn't see.) That was a very, very expensive lesson for me in how polarized lenses are not always your friend.
Also, I'm a photographer now. Polarized sunglasses fool you - they make the world look very different than it will look in a photo capture. Bluer skies, tamer glare highlights, more saturated colors in general. Takes your eyes awhile to adjust after you take them off... and then... disappointment. On shoots, I wear sunglasses with lenses that I know are totally neutral in terms of colors, and that are NOT polarized.
I wear polarized lenses when I'm driving someplace or just hanging out. They are so helpful when the sun is harsh. But when I raced, never after I got my own personal multi-thousand dollar lesson. And when I'm out on a travel shoot, never, other than when I'm driving between locations.

EdinNJJust like to say that I totally agree with what your saying.
Coming from a dirt bike and road bike background polarised lenses can cause serious mistakes to be made, even life threatening.
I usually stick with Rayban G-15 lenses as they give a very colour accurate representation of what your looking at and are non polarised.
