I must say so far (though haven't used these much) I rather like these; they're not perfect but I don't feel they "suck" or are useless as others here have said.
But I find it rather worrying that the reviews on their website are all five-star ratings and read like they've all been written by the same person. I have a real hard time believing those are all genuine reviews by genuine customers, particularly considering the reviews over here. That in turn implies some rather dodgy practices by the company making these things. What's going on there?
Hello Mr. dag.odenhall,
A lot of info here and all valuable to us here at Recoil! I regret being delayed in responding. A lot has been happening as we grow and it occurred to me it was time to check in on Massdrop customers.
Overall, my takeaway from your feedback is more actual and specific use cases of what winds well and won't will not; as well as, better packaging instructions and "how to" information. Being in customer service, I agree completely and think it would answer most of the questions and concerns you experienced.
We will continue to strive to improve the user interaction and experience as we grow. Thank you again and please contact me directly with any additional questions or have any other thoughts on product and user enhancements. email@example.com
Sincerely yours in striving to not "suck",
Recoil Customer Service
Thanks for your response.
Any clarification regarding the reviews on your website? I'm sorry to say they make the site read like a scam or phishing attempt, producing in me a strange sense of surreal absurdity and cognitive dissonance, since it's clearly not a scam or a phishing site and you clearly have, and ship, a real product with real value. I'm honestly curious; what's up with that? I'm sure if you ran all those reviews through an automated program for semantic analysis the result would indicate a single author with high probability.
It seems you've removed all reviews from the site now, though, which is just more worrisome and suspicious to be frank.
Now, to end in a more cheerful tone, I'll note that having used my winders for a while now I can say I'm quite happy with them and they really do help to untangle my life now that I've gotten the hang of how to use them efficiently.
Most notably, it's been a success story for storing and carrying the Pebble charging cable: while it's somewhat more tricky to wind earbuds gently (though I still do), and while I have more portable options for micro-USB charging (such as the Nomad ChargeKey or a self-winding cable), the Pebble has a custom connector to be water proof and the Recoil winder works great for this sort of cord.
Currently my main issue is that I either have one winder too many (for the bag I just need one pair of earbuds + the pebble charger) or alternatively way too few (for storing at home I could use one for each of my earbuds and lose cables)!
For future drops it would be nice to have options for what sizes to include in each pack. One of each is nice for testing the product but if I'm going for home storage I'll probably rather need a bunch of similar sizes.
Another idea is larger racks for more than three winders, or perhaps some kind of box or just any system for storing a bunch of winders in say a drawer. Currently my options are to either just throw them lose in the drawer, or lining up a bunch of 3-winder racks which wouldn't be optimally efficient: I imagine they'd move around in a drawer as you draw it in and out and adhesive would make it difficult to take them all out together. I'm thinking something like a cutlery tray, does that make sense?
Okay, so here is what happened with the reviews. We engaged an agency last year to create our web site and do our SEO. They provided all of the reviews to enhance our search results, I did question it at the time because frankly, it seemed weird to me as well that they were all so "canned". They assured us this was the right course for us to take and we trusted that. Since then, no new reviews have been posted because we stopped working with that agency - it was a bad experience over all.
After reading your comments, I realized we have learned a lot since working with that agency and now know there are many more valuable and authentic ways that to build our search results. So, we consulted with our new SEO expert and she suggested we just start with a clean slate and allow our customers to provide review content. We can bolster our product descriptions and marketing content to do some of that heavy lifting for SEO. That may makes sense now, but at the time those all 5 star reviews went up we didn't know any better and trusted an agency that wasn't really giving us great advice for building an honest and sincere online community.
There you have it regarding the reviews, not pretty yet the nature of a start up and being sometimes naive.
NOW on to the fun stuff.
I will get with the Massdrop folks and see what they think is doable for a build your "bundle" type drop. We also have colors now as well, so that could make it feel even more customized.
Regarding the bigger rack or storage system. We have a storage case in development now and going in to production this summer - should be ready by August. It will have a built in rack as well as other pockets and such for storing winders or associated items.
The Pebble use case is one we were not aware of and now I have a great reason to go by a Pebble! We will be doing more product photography soon and I will add that to our shot list.
Thank you again for sharing your thoughts and ideas. We truly welcome them and although may not be able to address every concern or act on every idea, it is amazing to have the direct dialogue with our customers.
Appreciate the honesty; it really restores, more than it might hurt, my confidence in the company. Transparency is good!
Looking forward to future drops and developments.
