I'm sorry you have encountered Dweller; he is truly a useless POS. That being said, this Core project is indeed useless unless you like hacking in Linux. If that is the case, it's a pretty novel device. My oldest son and I have spent a ton of time annoying everyone in the house with projects from SEEED. Great stuff, but yeah, totally useless unless implemented correctly...and still possibly quite useless, but educational.

I can't answer all the questions here. But I bought in and can try to explain why. This core is a high quality maker-board for a voice interactive agent, like google assistant or alexa. You need to be able to do a bit of programing in one of the programming languages they mention in the details in order to use this. The audio quality in terms of its mic array is one of the best of these sorts of boards or hats for raspberry pis that work with voice recognition and analysis. The audio output quality is up to you in terms of what speakers you hook it up to. If you want to build or play with your speaker or agent this is a very good board at a very good price--I haven't found anywhere else you can get them for $75. Every other site is at least $90.

me too- how easy to set up? How easy to reconfigure? Benefits? Downsides? It isn't a lot of $ to blow but I don't want it to end up in a drawer...

Also looking for input on this one. Anybody know how the Rokchip compares to the  XVSM3000 found in the minidsp UMA-8?

Zander343Check out the video on the Overview page if you can; it gives a few examples of the possibilities. Just based on the information on the drop page, this is my understanding: ReSpeaker Core gives you an AI assistant like Google Assistant/Alexa/Siri, except you can program it to do whatever you want. When you use a product with one of those AI assistants, you're using a pre-programmed set of human commands (e.g. "Play Michael Jackson") and machine responses (plays Michael Jackson music using another app). You're working within the bounds of what Google/Amazon/Apple have designed. With ReSpeaker Core, you can make it do whatever you want. For example, when you say "Bye, Felicia", it could unlock your front door, open the garage door, tell you about the local road conditions, turn down your thermostat, and wait 2 minutes before turning off your lights. At least some of those things are possible with those other assistants, but only if you buy products that are all designed to work within that ecosystem. ReSpeaker Core is also pretty small, allowing you to easily embed it within something you're making. In the video, it looks like they were often powering it from a small USB power bank.

Very tempting. Does this little powerhouse provide an API for OFFLINE speech processing? Everything I've seen to date either requires 2+ gigs of memory, or a connection to google/amazon/bing.

ZenSenFound the answer to my own question, snips can be installed on the device. https://snips.gitbook.io/documentation/installing-snips/respeaker-core-2.0
I wonder what the performance will be like.
