Hello, new to Massdrop, but not new to Retros. I was wondering if there may be a *spare* one of these out there that someone may be willing to part with. I unfortunately missed this one. I do some Retro customizing if that sweetens the pot for anyone

Any chance of another Massdrop exclusive Retro51 fountain pen?

We're trying to work something out again, but haven't been able to get anything planned for the near future yet.
If you subscribe to the Writing community already, you'll receive any email notification of a new Retro 51 project that needs voting and member input to create. If for some reason were able to run more of the Herringbone style, make sure to hit the Request button so you can receive that email notification as well.
In the meantime, keep posting your feedback and requests! This really helps us show Retro 51 how much Writing members want a return of a custom pen.
Is it normal that the black finishing is much paler on the pen conpared to the cap?... Surely I haven't worn it out with 2 hours of use :(
I was an early participant from the FIRST drop and I still haven't received my pen even though it's nearly six weeks since it had purportedly been sent out (usual delivery time about 2-3 weeks at most from previous purchases), after waiting several months for the pen to be manufactured. A much later purchase of another pen (the Namisu Orion) had arrived yesterday. A check with the tracking facility showed no progress from September 7th onward. A support ticket sent more than a week ago only received an automated response from one Nelson Wu, with no sign of any other action from Massdrop. What happened to my pen?

Well, finally, 2 days short of NINE MONTHS after delivery, this pen arrived safely, signed-for delivered by the postman!!

B-better late than n-never?
Can anyone tell me the dimension of the pen? I want to buy a Sleeve for it but I just don't know the dimension. Thank you
Mind F nib arrived yesterday. After a quick wash with soapy water to remove any manufacturing oil, I filled it with a non-challenging ink, Private Reserve American Blue. It is a super wet writer. No complaints, but more time is required for a final verdict.
Woot woot. Mine (Medium) just came in, filled it right away with Pelikan Edelstein Topaz.
Very smooth, wet writer. No skips or hard starts, tines were aligned.

This pen is freakin' awesome! I just our some DIAMINE Ancient copper in it and I can't put it down. I bought two in error but I'm keeping both. I'm in love !!! :-)
Exciting news group! We’re happy to report that all of the orders have been shipped out and are now on the way to you! Please allow 24-48 hours for tracking to get into the shipper's system and start updating.
If there’s anything else we can do to make your Massdrop experience better, feel free to contact us via “Contact Support” button in your transaction page: https://www.massdrop.com/transactions
Lovely, my pen says it's started shipping today. That's certainly great to hear. Can't wait to get it in my hands!
How many of this pen have been made total, including this order? It'd be nice to know how many there are out there, since they're all numbered.
KrisLyssara
Hi @KrisLyssara -- This was a limited edition of 300 numbered units.
JonasHeineman
So between the original set and these, I assume that it's unlikely there will be a third drop of them?
Thanks again for joining this drop! With your help we were able to make it successful for the community. We've just submitted the group's order with the vendor for the Retro 1951 Tornado Fountain Pen - Custom Edition and they are working hard to prepare it for shipment.
As soon as the group's order is ready at the vendor's location, they will send the bulk shipment to our warehouse in New Jersey where our warehouse team will break it up into individual orders and ship them directly to you! The current estimated ship date from our warehouse is 9/29.
Rest assured that we we will provide you all with updated information regarding the status of your order throughout the process. You can expect an update from us by the end of the day Pacific Time on 9/16.
What size nib does this pen have (#2, #5, #6, etcetera)?
GNABC
As far as I know Retro 1951 uses Schmidt FH452 nib units on their pens. With a nib wing span of 8.4~8.5 mm, they should be equivalent to #6 nibs.
So the only ones left are the broads then?
SL89
Only the mediums are left. There were only 5 broads and they sold out quickly.
I got this pen on the last drop (#98) and couldn't be happier! In person it's gorgeous, has a nice heft, and the attention to detail is great. This pen looks and feels like quality.
Want a bold, stub or italic...
Hey everyone. I've been enjoying this pen quite a bit ever since it arrived. I did a little review of the pen (complete with a bunch of photos) that I thought I'd share with any of you guys on the fence here: http://inklode.com/fountain-pens/retro-1951-tornado-ext-m1-massdrop/
I hope this isn't against any rules or anything. If it is please feel free to remove this post.
adamsw216
I don't think you're breaking any rules - in any case they'd need their heads read if they *did* remove your post: it really helps to sell the pen! Like you, I'm really pleased with my purchase - the pen looks substantial, but is surprisingly light (in a good way) to hold and to write with...
Only 19 pens left before these are all sold out - definitely worth considering, if you're on the fence with this one.
Looks like I'll have a new pen for the start of the school year hehe.
In the drop right now it looks like that there is no option for a converter neithers seems that a converter is included. Is there something specific needed or does a standard converter fitting the pen?
MarkIV
It is a standard international converter, and it comes with one.
What are the dimensions of this pen?? Particularly the UNPOSTED body (tip to tail) ?
I prefer to write with pens unposted, if they are long enough. If they are too short for this (about 125mm) then the cap needs to post low to not overbalance the pen to the back end.
thnx,
markeh
Unposted it's 126.5mm - which works pretty well for me; posted it's closer to 160mm, though it doesn't really post securely. The grip section tapers from a 10mm diameter (near the threads) to around 9mm towards the nib, which again is pretty standard.
Woot!
I purchased this pen in the original drop.
I actually like it a lot more than thought i might. It's actually very light for a metal pen and the balance (unposted) is prety good. Despite being light it doesn't feel cheap. One thing I didn;t expect is that the herringbone is very definitely a textured raised surface. It's not smooth (though it looks a bit like it in the photo. At first this put me off a bit, but now I actually really quite like it. It's certainly a good looking pen in person and is very functional. The nib is a solid, decent steel nib (physically, it's actually larger than you might expect on a pen this size, which is nice).. The medium I have is probably on the narrow side for a European medium (definitely narrower than say a Pelikan), which personally I like, since my writing tends to be on the small side. (loops and e's are not filled in).
Would I buy this again? At this price, yes I think I would!
Here's my pen (#284), complete with ugly handwriting sample - tried to upload previously but couldn't work out how to do it right...

My pen has just arrived in the mail today - with a luscious, smooth-writing B nib. Veeery long wait, but... a very attractive looking (and feeling) pen. [I would second some of the negative comments about the converter, though: it works fine, at least for now, but is pretty cheap-looking...]
out of interest at the top of the pen cap mine says retro51 051, does that mean I have pen no 51 or is the number stamped elsewhere?
suef
I think you just got lucky there, @suef. Nice pull!
just received my pen in Australia, love everything about it!
Well, I got mine last night and gave it a test run, and it was everything a fountain pen ought to be; smooth, free-flowing, and light in the hand. I suppose fate singled me out for one of the perfectly aligned ones because I've got a desk covered in fountain pen-specific tools to apply to problems like the ones reported.
After being involved in a bit of a mix-up on another drop, I'll counsel those with a trouble-making pen to patience; the resolution process may grind slowly, but it does grind its way to satisfaction. Given what I'm enjoying here, it will be worth the effort to pursue it. Really, really worth it; the one I've got is in my on-deck rack with an OMAS and a vintage Parker, and it's not feeling inadequate.
I got mine, and absolutely love it! I was laughing though; I finally put my Diamine Blue Velvet into it, which is my ideal blue ink, and then laughed that it was very close (though subtly different) to the blue ink of the biro I'd been using earlier. But it's gorgeous to hold, sturdy to carry, and gets comments everywhere. I even had another pen collector, who KNOWS $1000+ pens, assume I paid over $2k for it.
I love my Massdrop Tornado and I really hope we can do another round of them so I can buy a couple of them to give as gifts to people who've been huge in my life.
I received my pen today, after 3 weeks delay while I sailed around California in support of our US Navy. It is not only beautiful, it is light and comfortable to hold. The included converter works great with my Private Reserve Naples Blue ink... Very Pleased and only hope everyone has as lovely a product as I have here.

JDunaway
Hey @Jdunaway and @Jamerelbe...

I got number 71 so that's good. I ended up filling up the pen with J Herbin 1670 Stormy Grey. I think the ink matches the pen well.

Sadly, stormy grey doesn't take to pictures very well...
