Mine arrived today. I like the physical light a lot but its output is a bit underwhelming compared to my Lumintop AAA Tool Nichia 219B. Both have Amazon NiMH rechargable batteries installed (AAA in the Tool and AA in the ReyLight). The AA is fully charged and the AAA is my EDC light that has seen lots of use with this battery since its last charge. The Tool is much brighter despite its smaller battery. I'll have to pick up a 14500 for the ReyLight and see how it works. I like the size and shape of the ReyLight. Its color temperature is pretty nice too.

photoman12001I also got mine today, and I agree the output is pretty crap.
My EDC light that is rated at 36 lumens is brighter then this on high. The AA I'm using could be old I guess. I'll have to test with a new one.

Moose2046I just ordered a couple of these: http://www.batteryjunction.com/xtar-14500-800.html There was a lot of discussion about 14500 batteries not fitting/functioning in this light due to excessive overall length. Someone stated to ensure the overall length was no more than 50mm. Another stated that the batteries I ordered worked; their overall length is listed as 50.5mm. Many of the other protected cells have listed overall lengths of around 52mm. I'm hoping these work because I would like to stick to protected cells. I'll report back after I receive the batteries.
A note on these battery labels and sizes for those who don't know: The numbers tell you the dimensions of the battery: AABBC AA = Diameter (mm) BB = Overall length (mm) So a 14500 battery should be 14mm in diameter and 50mm in overall length. However, this does not include thickness added by a label or protection circuitry. The 50mm applies to a flat top battery without protection circuitry. The little "button" on one end comes from added protection circuitry and increases the overall length past the 50mm. That circuitry protects from such things as dangerous conditions due to overcharging.
I'm not an expert on battery technology but that's a summary of what I've learned while researching rechargeable Li-Ion batteries for a few other lights I bought on Massdrop. If any of that information is incorrect, feel free to let me know.

photoman12001My Xtar 14500 batteries arrived today. They are slightly longer than the AA batteries but they fit and function fine in the light. There is a little more resistance when screwing on the head but nothing significant. After charging them I did a quick comparison. If you have this light you MUST get 14500 batteries. I think the comparison photo speaks for itself. It's nice to have the option of a AA in a pinch but the 14500 really makes this flashlight "shine".
If you are willing to buy and use 14500 batteries, I recommend picking up this light. It's very nice and capable with that battery. If you only want to use AA batteries, I would pass on this one. You can get similar lighting from a smaller Lumiptop Tool AAA if you're using a AA in the ReyLight.
In case you have trouble reading the text on the photo, here is a summary: Top: Fully charged Amazon AA NiMH, high setting Bottom: Fully charged Xtar 14500 800 mAh, high setting Distances to walls, near to far, in feet: 4.5, 11.5, 17, 37 iPhone camera settings: ISO 23, Shutter 1/10 second, Aperture f/2.2, White Balace 4000K

EvshrugYeah, it’s good to download third party applications that allow control of those camera settings. The iPhone was mounted to a tripod for the photos.
