For folks who ended up buying these... how durable is the binding? Does it lay flat nicely? Do pages start tearing away eventually? I usually have that problem with staplebound notebooks, so I'm curious to hear how the sewn-spine binding holds up.

are these really worth the hype and the price premium vs moleskine or leuchtturm1917?

DocZZZAgreed, yes these are very, very nice.
DocZZZThe standard staplebound A5 Rhodia notebooks are like $3.5 each. I'll get those instead.
Rhodia make beautiful paper. This is their “R” series paper. These books aren’t available in Australia so it’s great to see them here at such a good price.

They are a little more expensive per page than some options but you can use both sides because of the great paper. They are also firm cover and nicely sewn spine that makes them more durable. I use them for shorter projects than you would use a Franklin Christoph, rhodia notebook, midori, seven seas, taroko, or other notebook.
Personally,I don't use both sides of 52gsm tomoe river, so that cancels out a lot of the difference.

Seems very expensive for 4 notebooks with only 32 sheets each.
