My only question is - will the Thor 6 be coming to Massdrop as well? Because I *want* this knife, but I *need* the Thor 6.
As to any price complaints or "X knife from Y company is cheaper and therefore a better deal" comments that might have already been made and are sure to come as this discussion continues, this is a fairly large knife with a full titanium handle featuring very nice anodizing and incredible milling work. It also has a beautifully made blade using a premium blade steel. If you aren't willing to pay for all of those things, then you obviously are not the knife's target audience, but it's pretty comparable to other knives with similar production methods and materials. The Benchmade Anthem and Spyderco Nirvana for example. Saying that you can get another knife at a lower price that doesn't have all the same work or materials going into it is pretty much like saying water is wet.
UnwisefoolIt's very similar to this knife in the basic overall shape, but with blade milling and a handle design I find more interesting. It will probably be even more expensive than this though, because the milling looks like it's much more complicated as well. You can see it on the rike_knife Instagram feed, and it's beautiful. To me at least.
greyworlderI completely agree. It's priced fine. I don't think I've seen an integral knife with this much detail other than the Thor 6. And most people are not seeing an integral knife, just an expensive knife.
Dhill21I use my knives every day, and only a couple have a warranty any better than Rike provides. Even so, I've never had to use one. I break down boxes, open packages, and cut cord and rope and stuff basically every day, but I'm not really sure how that could damage a knife so severely that I'd have to send it in for repairs. I can sharpen my own knives just fine, so that part of the warranty is useless to me. But if it makes a difference for you, then by all means spend your money there instead.
greyworlderSometimes there isn't a nice soft surface below me when I use mine. I had a Spyderco Para 2 one time, and of course it slipped out of my hand and chipped the tip.
I can sharpen my own knives as well, but after multiple sharpenings, the material you remove obviously won't come back . . . but in short, I had a noticeably shorter knife blade than what it began.
I like the warranty aspect not because I abuse knives, but because accidents can happen. To me, it just doesn't make sense to have to replace a whole knife when just the blade is broken or worn out . I prefer to have the option to get a new blade for cheap that's factory new (what's not to like about that?). If you accidentally damage a Spyderco for example, they'll say something like, "we recommend you retire the knife."
At the end of the day, I'm just saying I'd rather spend $30 to fix a $400 knife then spend another $400 to replace it. I think of it like most insurance, I don't plan on having to use it and I never have had to.
Dhill21To add, my decisions on knives vastly differ based on use. Maritime search & rescue is one of our main functions at my job, in addition to landside law enforcement; the knife in this discussion probably wouldn't be suitable for the job, but I do enjoy more stylish options for off duty. Another factor is that my go to companies tend to offer killer public service discounts. You can get ZT's for example on a site called Experticity for %50 off msrp.
Dhill21Well, that sounds like a pretty amazing deal on ZT. I've had a couple of them, one was great and one was pretty terrible in the sense that I hated carrying it and using it. Hand feel and weight and stuff were off for me, not the fault of the knife obviously. However, I couldn't really get them for any kind of major discount, and I felt like both were expensive for what I got at the time. A 50% discount would have changed that! Up until this last year they hadn't released anything I really just had to have. I'll be getting the 0462 though. Big fan of Sinkevich, and I love the red carbon fiber.
Overall though it just sounds like you have a different use case than I do for what you need out of a knife, which is a perfectly valid reason to go with something else. Since I don't often work up on a ladder anymore, I'm much less concerned about falls and such. One of these would suit my needs perfectly fine. And I think they are lovely, though I prefer the 6 to the 5. I might send in a Rike for warranty work someday just to see what the process is like, because I haven't had any experience. Depending on what you've done it's only supposed to be shipping cost, but who knows what would actually end up happening.
greyworlderI really like the looks of the smaller 0460 and I’m kicking myself for not be able to get one. That Experticity site limits you to 1 ZT per year and I got a 0095 with that. My limit will refresh in a few months though, but they aren’t carrying the 0460 anymore ☹️Would have been just $110
Dhill21Spyderco doesn't do blade swaps, I think only Benchmade, ZT, and some small custom shops are willing to do that kind of overhaul of a mature working knife for any price.
