Disappointing. The quality of the steel is way below par. I bought two knives. The damascus pattern is barely visible in one knife, and needs the right lighting to show up on the other. The handles and action are nice, but I bought it for the damascus.

munkewSorry to hear you got a bum one. I bought 3,and while all 3 do show the patterns well, they do have different levels of darkness to them...that's often the nature when etching pattern welded steels to bring out the patterns, it's never really an exact science unfortunately
If you want to try your hand at re-etching it yourself, check out this pdf from the Damasteel website :http://www.damasteel.se/files/3514/5986/0902/Data_Sheet_Martensitic_Damascus_Patterned_Steel.pdf
If you scroll down to the section on etching it recommends 3 different ways of getting different levels of contrast.
Not saying anyone should have to do this on a new knife themselves, just saying it's an option.
NOTE: ONLY do this if you're comfortable with the safety procedures of working with strong acids

KavikThanks Kavik, that’s an interesting option! But probably not for me. Living in a highrise...no workshop (sadly).

munkewHaha I hear ya. In a small apartment building myself, but thankful my landlord has no idea the kinds of things I work on in here! Easier to ask for forgiveness than permission, right? Lol
Another thought might be asking around on some of the knife forums, I'm sure people must offer the service, but I have no idea what they'd charge. Again, just an idea. I'd offer, but my etching experience is limited to electric etching, or chemical etching of carbon steels with much milder things such as vinegar, mustard, etc
Or just sell them at a profit between MD pricing and retail pricing lol

KavikLOL! I'm in Singapore...not much of an active knife community here. I'm giving the nicer knife to my brother, who's the actual knife collector. I just like sharp pointy things :-)
