I used Rite in the Rain products while I was in the Army. I can confirm that pencil is the best writing tool for the paper. Softer lead is better than harder, but too soft of lead and it smears badly. Erasers are iffy and tend to smear rather than erase. However, I did have better luck with the putty-style soft erasers and the hard, gummy erasers that leave crumbs everywhere.

sallenHey @Sallen, glad our stuff held up so well for you in the Army. Regarding lead hardness, I like to recommend #2B leads. The darker leads work great, especially on our tinted books (our green, tan, and black books have paper with a corresponding hue).
Indeed, erasers have various results on our stuff. Black erasers generally don't do well, pink ones work okay, and grey and white block erasers typically do very well. I like the erasers on our No. 99 Mechanical Pencil, the Uni Boxy Eraser, and the white Pentel block erasers.

I hate to be one of those commenters, but I found the same product for the same price at that site that shall not be named. While the Cordura is a great material to use for the covers, I'll admit I was disappointed to see that "Rite In The Rain 3X5 Cover - Black Leather - Side #34" wasn't an option for the package.

ElliottHey @Elliott -- Thanks for letting us know, I spoke with the vendor and we've been able to make an even lower point available. We'll give this a few more days to see if that helps it to succeed.

I love Rite in the Rain notebooks, but this doesn't seem like a great deal, with only one notebook included. I prefer the spiral-bound All Weather Notebooks with their plastic covers. They don't really need a special pouch. I also find pencils are the best writing instruments for these notebooks. For the cost of this drop, you can buy six tactical size notebooks and some nice pencils.

BarryHey Barry,
At the base price, this is a $5 savings on our MSRP and comes with the notebook, cover, and one of our all-weather pens. That's not too bad a deal to start. Pencils do work great, and ballpoint pens work great, too. Try Zebras, Fishers, Uni Jetstreams and Power Tanks, Parker Jotters, etc. The included RITR pen is a stud on its own merit, but by no means are you required to use any special inks with our stuff.

Works perfect, but leaving out the multicam cover option for this drop was disappointing.

I've used these on a school field trip and I can confirm they work really well, but you need to write in pencil with them.
I took a page, submerged it fully in water and you can still write on it!
Erasers are meh on it though.

Houdini117Indeed, I'll confirm that our paper demands a bit more effort to erase. I recommend white erasers over pink/black ones. Pentels and ArtGums work well, as do the standard erasers on Ticonderoga pencils or our No. 99 Mechanical Pencil.
Glad to hear that you liked our stuff when you used it. If you're writing outdoors, this stuff will just work. Heat, cold, rain, snow, mud... bring it on.
