Note that they recently released the A2 model (around the time of the last drop of this): http://www.seeedstudio.com/RPLIDAR-A2-The-Thinest-LIDAR-p-2687.html. I'm sure they're just trying to get rid of old stock.

I don't understand why Massdrop wouldn't link in the datasheet for this. They just do the bare minimum to advertise the product (and often with spelling mistakes and wrong information) and then leave it up to everyone else to do the research. Here is the page on RobotShop.com which has links to the datasheet and user manual: http://www.robotshop.com/ca/en/rplidar-360-laser-scanner.html

DreaMaginePerhaps that's because people who voted for the item are expected to know what it is that they want. Unfortunately, they don't know what kind of deal MD will make, so the only unknown is the price. I'd jump on this at $200, for instance, but not at $368. Perhaps the voting mechanism needs to be expanded so MD would know what the 'clearing price' would be, e.g., if 10 say they'd buy it at $300 and 50 at $250 they'd have a better negotiation with the vendor.

Thanks again for joining this drop! We have submitted the group's order with the vendor for the RPLIDAR 360 Laser Scanner Development Kit and they are working hard to prepare it for shipment.
As soon as the group's order is ready at the vendor's location, they will send the bulk shipment to our warehouse in New Jersey where our warehouse team will break it up into individual orders and ship them. The current estimated ship date from our warehouse is 4/15.
We will keep the group updated throughout the fulfillment process. You can expect an update from us by the end of the day Pacific Time on 4/11.

Ah forgive my ignorance, did not fully look into this unit. Now that I've read more into this technology, it is actually quite interesting. Does anyone know if this uses open source software?

Han_SoloThat's not what this is at all. That Thingiverse link is to a 3d scanning stage that scans one thing placed on it's stage. This would do a really poor job of that just as much as that scanner would do a poor job as a robot navigation sensor.

What kind of software do you need to get usable scans from it?

Depending on the resolution of this thing that's either great or way overpriced.
