Does this only read in Brix? Or does it have a Specific Gravity scale also?

jimdkcMost of these units have both. Remember SG measurements are thrown off when measuring things that have alcohol.

Aw, I just bought one of these for $40 from my LHBS. This is highly recommended for any home brewer who hates using a hydrometer.

ManbearLearn from my mistakes and remember that you must perform a calculation for FG using this since alcohol throws the reading off

Can this measure sugar in a honey?

semkaThese are really meant for sugar in liquid solution. Honey would be far beyond the limits of the refractometer due to its high viscosity.

Is it possible to use this for measuring brine salinity for example ?

fabienneNo. This works only for concentrations of optically active compounds, i.e. those with chirality.
or use an hydrometer

CalaverasgrandeHydrometers are very temperature dependant and use a lot of liquid, while these only take a few drops and the size is so negligible that the temperature normalizes pretty quickly. Not good for final gravity readings since the alcohol distorts the reading (but there are calculators to accommodate this) but it is very handy for original readings.

MeastyThank you!! I could put a user story behind this tech but at 25 drop participants I knew somebody was planning on doing something cool with it.
