I love the sawyer filters, but the squeeze bags make me nervous. Too many fails.

Sueb2bWhy is there ANY discussion about "squeeze"? I know Sawyer makes a popular squeeze system, but this is a gravity system, no? I presume its the same filter? Maybe not, but regardless they make good filters, though you have to keep them from freezing. Platypus and Evernew bladder bottles I presume still fit for filling, but you're typically not going to have a gallon one of those. I would think its for filling multiple bottles/bladders with a hose attachment for filling any bottle.

scopeI was just about to say that. This is not a squeeze system, it’s a gravity system. Two different products.

scopeI know it’s the gravity system, but the bag material looks the same as the squeeze. Too many failures on that material using a squeeze for me to try this system.
I believe i mentioned i one’d I love the sawyer filters. I’ll stick w/my heavier version of the sawyer gravity.

Sueb2bYep, bag material looks the same. I also think your worry is irrelevant in regards to a gravity product. I don't think the bags are that bad, I do think they've sometimes failed under the pressure of squeeze and user error. Not for me, but for others I know. I didn't care for the squeeze, too much effort for me and maybe I just didn't make it fail. Otherwise, I just don't believe there is anything "bad" about these bags that should cause concern.

Sueb2bAgreed, shouldn't be much concern over bag strength for a gravity application, but yes, they appear to have a fairly high failure rate with this 1 gallon bag as they do with the pouches. If the flow rate isn't to your liking, it would seem that replacing that too-short tubing with a longer length (or two pieces above and below the filter that together are longer in total length) would speed it up. This creates head pressure and speeds up normal in-line filters that are DIY rigged into gravity systems very nicely. The mini still flows a bit slower but you can get it at its max flow rate and try to keep it there by proper maintenance (back flushing and demineralizing when needed).

StepbystepWhat do you use to demineralize?

ChilltownVinegar solution. I do maybe 50%, just run a pint through and let it sit for several hours/overnight, followed by thorough back flushing with clean water.
