Sebastian81I would love to see you back up that accusation. This is a fantastic price for an automatic (manual movement) watch. The automatic term comes from the slide weight in the back of the watch that rotates around with the movement of your wrist, which then winds the main spring. It is termed automatic because before the late 18th century, you needed to wind the mainspring in the watch every couple of hours. Usually good automatic watches start at $1200 and go up quickly. The best watches are made by Patek-Philipe and usually retail in the neighborhood of $10,000.

NinhalemYou don't need to tell me what an automatic movement is and how it works, these Seagull movements are the lowest end of them, in price and quality. Please do not compare them with swiss made automatic movements! If you look at the picture with the see through caseback, you see a really cheap made sleight weight, just riveted together from 2 sheet metal parts. Not worth the money!

Sebastian81I agree it is a very cheap movement but it's not a bad deal for the price.

Sebastian81That "sleight weight" is called the rotor in watch terminology. This article on the AP 3120 movement states:
http://www.p178host.com/apgallery/3120/
"The inner part of most rotors are relatively thin and necessitate a riveted or screw mounted weight on the outer diameter."
Can you explain why you think rotors constructed of 2 pieces of metal riveted together are trash ?
I'm no expert on watch movements, but most reviews I've read online consider the ST17 to be an accurate and reliable movement.

Sorry, I'm inclined to disagree. The ST17 is a very accurate and reliable movement (as mentioned above) particularly for the price you pay. No, it's no Rolex, but it's not bottom-of-the-barrel either. You can do much worse (see: any of those ~$20 chinese cheapie automatics on ebay or Amazon, although even those sometimes aren't bad either).
Sea-Gull is the most reputable and established Chinese watchmaker there is IMO, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend their stuff.

Sebastian81The "Swiss Made" argument is BS cause getting around it is quite easy comparatively. The legal definition of "Swiss Made" is 50% or more of the value (including cost and labor). This is actually quite easy to do with Foreign Ebauches Movements. Whereas the legal definition of "Made in the USA" holds far more weight as "all or virtually all" of the actual product must be made in the USA.
There are many watches using "Swiss Made" parts such as the EL18/CL-888 vs the ST16 (a Seagull movement BTW)
As for watch movements, in terms of accuracy and stability, Seagull does very well. I own a CL-888 watch, which is nothing more than a refinished ST16 movement. The ST17 makes much improvements on it.
For the price you pay, it is a true workhorse and comparable to other well known automatics movements on the lower end. I wouldn't say it it's as good as the Orient 46943 (it comes close), but does compare well to the older Seiko 7S26 and the the Miyota 8215.
Many companies on the lower end use this as a cheaper alternative to the ETA 2824-2 and the SW-200 clones, so it's definitely a bang for the buck. I've also heard reports on better reliability than the SW-200 so take that for what it's worth.

Sebastian81You're an idiot if you automatically discredit Sea-Gull because they're Chinese.

DankkI agree with Sebastian81 entirely. I love ST17, SEA-Gull movements. I have three watches using them and I am more than impressed. I have them for some while and they are extremely reliable and run within 10 secs or better per day. I also have Miyotas and seiko automatics as well as a couple of Starkings which you may snigger at but the build and High beat 8 bps are also without problems so far after several months. I prefer to enjoy my Chinese built watches than to spend a fortune trying to tell the world what a rich prat I am with my multi thousand pound liability i have on my wrist which needs an expensive service regularly to protect the fortune invested in it.SO who has the clever option?. Sebastion and I!

Sebastian81chinese movements are now used in those expensive swiss watches so your information is not up to date. Chinesee technology is advanced and the US and EU makes a big mistake. The made in US slogan stands now nothing. Please educate yourself. Did you know China build the complete underground of Istanbul in a half year.
