Wondering how this drop is quite so expensive when the SainSmart version is regularly $57.99 -- anyone seeing justification for one and not the other?

RazzixI couldn't answer that honesty when I could spend a little more and get a Hakko for $100 with is by far a much much better tool. Unlike this the Hakko has resale value so should I change my mind about I shouldn't have too hard of a time selling it, and tips are $14 that's just robbery, you can find Hakko tips for $8-10.
RazzixThis one comes with a 65W power brick, while the SainSmart version comes with a 19V 2A wall wart (less than 38W after efficiency losses). There are versions of this soldering iron on aliexpress that are super cheap, but don't come with a power supply at all, and you are left responsible for finding a usable supply. The soldering iron is capable of using any 12-24V DC 5.5mm x 2.5mm tip laptop power supply, I believe.
I have a Hakko FX-888 (the older analog dial version) and I love it, but it is definitely a soldering STATION. When I want to take a decent, familiar soldering iron to the makerspace or on the road it is just too big to take along. I've been interested in getting something like this to keep in my portable electronics tool kit... I just haven't been quite tempted enough to pull the trigger on it just yet. Maybe it'll convince me this time around.

TipsyMacScotchslurpenOh man, I'm sorry didn't realize I was dealing with a dickhead and wasn't specific enough a Hakko FX-601 soldering IRON, retails for $100 and when I went to look for just to make sure they still make them found that they can be bought for as little as $75.  If you're talking portable look no further than the FX-901 CORDLESS soldering IRON that can be shipped to your door for $30!!
ZatarotWait, "dickhead"? What did I say that made you mad? Sorry for assuming that you were talking about the FX-888... It's just that it is the most popular Hakko soldering "thing" carried by the most popular electronics store websites (geared towards makers, anyway) where I am (the USA), Adafruit and Sparkfun. They also retail on those sites for the ~$100 price that you mentioned.
I was really just trying to be informative and then I was just trying to relay my experience with my FX-888 and why I was considering this tool. I just emphasized that my Hakko station was a "STATION" because it is just so huge. I wasn't criticizing your post in any way.
Those Hakko FX-600 and FX-601 are really interesting. You can buy one model and then a set of interchangeable parts to swap back and forth between the two models. The 600 is advertised as being good for IC/LED and PCB work, while the 601 handles high heat jobs like soldering large connectors to wire or a chassis. The only thing I don't like about it is the analog temperature selector. That is the one thing I don't like about my FX-888.
Also, my reply should have been to the person who started the thread. My mistake.

TipsyMacScotchslurpenIt wasn't what you said it was your condescending tone as if you are the only one knowledgeable on the subject, and that's how I am if someone is disrespectful I reply in kind if you weren't trying to be so. So if I misconstrued then I apologize. Well, you weren't only responding to the OP since the op only asked about SainSmart never mentioned Hakko.
ZatarotWell, I apologize if that is how it sounded. I am far from a soldering or soldering equipment expert. I was just hoping to point out something I had discovered between the SEEED and SainSmart offerings, and then the second part certainly was inspired by what you wrote and I was just explaining what my experience and reasoning would be for considering one of these. I had no idea Hakko made a soldering iron with a selectable temp that didn't force you to lug around the base station temp controller.

TipsyMacScotchslurpenFWIW, I didn't sense anything condescending in the tone of your original response, TipsyMacScotchslurpen.

KalliumYeah, seriously. I don't know how anything he/she said xame off as condescending. It was basically just some good information.

ZatarotUnless your going to use it in your day to day job a Hakko is extremely overkill (just like buying a Fluke multi-meter for home use). Any $10 30w-40w iron will do the trick.
I would pick up the Hakko tips for even a Radio Shack iron as it does make a big difference.
