I bought a mens Seiko Watch a few months ago from Marc at Long Island Watch. You can't beat the customer service. http://www.longislandwatch.com/Seiko_Watches_Island_Watch_s/1836.htm They have great reviews. I also have a few Orient's that are nice too. Seiko makes Orient just a smaller niche brand of watches.
I bought a Seiko 5 very similar to the shinny blue bezel model listed here. It looked like a modern-sized watch on his child wrist, and he loves it. The links are a pain to remove, but other than that this makes a great gift for a young man. Swatches are so common, but a quality, automatic adult-looking watch is truly unique and cool.
RayBrIf a Seiko works when it arrives, it will work for years. I do not know of a more reliable brand. It is automatic though, so you should still be careful with it (Seiko quartz is very difficult to break, whereas all mechanical movements are susceptible to shocks). Overall though, either it works when it arrives, or it does not. Seiko watches do not dies one year later. I say that as someone who has owned dozens of them (almost entirely automatic).
Slightly off topic but I have this model and attempted to mod the dial glass with this domed sapphire one (http://www.watchesbynick.com/watch-parts/30mm-domed-sapphire-crystal), but the watch stores I went wouldn't mod it for me saying the crystal was too thick. Are they wrong? or right? Anyone able to comment on this situation?
Venediction3.5 mm is not that bad. Many people use those huge double-domed 5 mm crystals, and many Seiko 5's will not take them. I do know that you can get 2.2 and 2.8 mm sapphire crystals, but the doming may be part of the issue. The downside of the thinner crystal is that they are more likely to shatter. That is rare, but it does happen.

Oh man... I was all set to jump on this as I've been wanting a blue-face Seiko for business/formal wear. But then I noticed the metal bracelet is not replaceable with a leather strap (bracelets just don't do it for me). Dang. Hope to see some of the other blue Seiko 5 watches here that can take a strap. Nice offering nonetheless.
I was about to jump on this too even though its a bit small for my wrist; thank you for pointing out that the bracelet cannot be replaced with a strap.
Dumb question time.
This watch is rated with 30m of water resistance. Why do the the various stores have a warning that it is suitable for rain or splashing but not swimming or even showering?
30m is significantly deeper than most people ever go, water shouldn't be a concern...
Thank you for that. A lot of it I sort of knew but needed reinforcement.
I still consider it ridiculous that you would need to think about it while washing your hands etc.
We do however live in this world and not the one we want...
I teach scuba, regularly see 100m rated watches taken to ~20m depth, I never had an issue, nor met anyone who has. My 300m went down to 60m multiple times without issues. I think you're being a little bit conservative in your assessment. From my experience I'd go; 30m - pool swimming, 100m - light scuba, 300m - go for your life, you'll break before the watch does.
