I agree that purchasing through an AD, and paying a little more, can be worth the assurance that you're getting the real deal, and should also mitigate headaches should an issue arise. That said, any 3rd party dealer worth their salt and reputation will do a return or exchange for a watch that exhibits QC issues and doesn't measure up to the buyer's standard. It comes down to the buyer doing their research to find out which retailers stand behind the product and who they are comfortable purchasing from.
As far as Massdrop sourcing Seiko watches (or other items for sale here) from an authorized dealer or Seiko directly, I beg to differ that's done for all the drops on this website; maybe for some but certainly not all. If MD did arrange the purchase from Seiko or an AD, then why don't any of the Seiko drops come with the manufacturer's warranty? Even Amazon and Jomashop retain the warranty. I've posted this query on a few watch drops here and have yet to see a representative from Massdrop chime in to confirm where they're coming from. This by itself isn't definitive proof that MD isn't sourcing their Seiko watches directly from the manufacturer or an authorized dealer, but the lack of warranty is definitely suspect and something I would expect from a gray-market vendor. At this time, there's no proof either way.
Cheers!
It seems like Seiko is slapping the "5" on many watches that don't quite comply with that hallmark.
1. Automatic winding 2. Day/date displayed in a single window 3. Water resistance 4. Recessed crown at the 4 o’clock position 5. Durable case and bracelet (I guess it meets 3 of the 5 original criteria).
On a plus note, it has the 4R35 which has hand winding and hacking, unlike the 7S36 which is common in other Seiko 5 models.
Also this one lacks the "Japan" markings.
I finally bought mine (Alpinist) on ebay for 301$ (free shipping) about 3-4 weeks back which was cheaper than the last drop price on MD i think. Same vendor on eBay is selling it for 428 now after it was discontinued
rahulnyThe watch being offered in this drop isn't the Alpinist. Different case, different size, different WR, different movement, etc. The 4R35 is a pretty good movement but this watch isn't in the same class as the Alpinist.
As a certified PADI diver, any watch one should use for diving needs to be rated at 200 meters or you should NOT dive with it. Calling this one a "Sports Diver" is misleading.
AniacoI see the SRPB91K1 (my preferred style) on Amazon for $184... hmm, save $5 and wait weeks or don't save the money and have it in 2 days via Prime.
Nice looking watches, but I would much prefer a 40-41mm watch that was closer to 11mm tall, especially as I'd bet that the crystal is flat/not domed.
Probably a fine watch, but if I were looking for a watch in this price bracket right now, I'd probably default to the Orient Ray II due to size - or spring for the Mako II USA.
