Inspired by military-issue watches of the 20th century, Seiko’s Kinetic Field Watch features a simple yet utilitarian dial typical of its forebears, with luminous syringe-style hands and all. Arabic numerals 1 through 12 are large, while small arabic numerals 13 through 24 display military time on the inner ring. On the outer ring, you’ll find lumed block markers at the hour positions, with four stick markers between each one. Positioned at 3 o’clock is a date window, while the 6 o’clock position displays the words “Kinetic” and “100M.” Also reminiscent of the classic field watch: a round, brushed stainless steel case.
Note: At checkout, you’ll have your choice between the black on canvas SKA727 and the black on stainless steel SKA721 (+ $10). Quantities of each are limited.
Released by Seiko in the late 1980s, kinetic movements combine the accuracy of a quartz watch with the winding mechanism of an automatic. By simply wearing the watch, you’ll provide the capacitor with power, which is then stored in the battery. Fully charged, a kinetic watch will store up to 6 months of power. To determine the watch’s power reserve, hit the button at the 2 o’clock position—if it skips ahead 30 seconds, it has between 4 and 6 month of power; 20 seconds, it has approximately 1 month; 10 seconds, it has between 7 days and 1 month; 5 seconds, and it has between 1 and 7 days of power reserve.
