Love the look of the watch, but want something further up the Seiko food chain with a better movement. What do people suggest for a classic diver look that isn't too chunky?

MistertazSkx has better depth rating and overall quality but it's the same non-hacking non-hand winding movement. If you want a nicer movement you'd have to upgrade to a turtle or a samurai for the hackable and hand-windable 4r movement. A little further up the food chain you can also find the Sumo and Shogun with the 6r movement. After that you'd be getting into the marine master range.

MistertazI love the SRP309 Orange Monster. Has the 4R36 self-wind/hand-wind/hackable movement. If you consider Orient part of the Seiko family, I recommend the Ray II Diver (with the F69 movement) in black (PVD). These are great additions to any collection, regardless of price. Good luck!
