Here is some more information on these from Tyll at Innerfidelity...not exactly the greatest vote of confidence for me personally.
"Sennheiser HD8 DJ, HD7 DJ, and HD6 DJ - These were a bit of a head-scratcher. They're far from neutral, but they might be a good match for working DJs. The bass is powerful and tight, and the treble is very non-fatiguing due to a big notch out of a region centered at 6kHz. Sennheiser claims these cans were voice by working pro DJs. My problem is that I'm not a DJ so I really don't know how to evaluate this EQ for the intended use; I can say, however, that they aren't neutral enough for audiophile listeners to use for listening pleasure. I'll also note that the HD6 DJ is supposedly designed for studio use while mixing, but with a frequency response not that dissimilar to the HD8 DJ and HD7 DJ I have to question if it's really a good headphone for that application. The overall character is quite similar for all three cans, and quite far from neutral. Sorry, don't think I can review these cans in the context of DJs, and don't think they're worth reviewing for audiophiles."

LxJLthrI read a lot of Tyll's writings too but in this case I'm not sure if he still thinks it's not an audiophile appropriate set of cans. Since that was written the Harman perception study has been published and it doesn't support the hypothesis that the frequency response should be neutral for a set of cans to be perceived as good sounding.

AxollottHmmm Something to look into. Thanks for that study mention. I do agree that sound is subjective, but my ears and preferences have generally agreed with his impressions (which is why I said 'personally'). Regardless, I think some information are better than none. It is up to each individual to determine if it is applicable to them.

needhelpLe sigh. The short sightedness and disrespect elders receive in today's society...
...Tyll does not dictate anything, but his impressions and measurements have substance since he has got 60 years worth of subject matter expertise in the industry. Is it end all be all? Nope. But one can do a lot worst when researching a potential purchase.

LxJLthrRead that study and maybe your opinion will change, good headphone sound seems to be more objective than it used to be believed.

AxollottEff being tired LOL I don't think I phrased myself correctly...I think there is merit in sound measurements and that headphones with different sound tuning/signatures can all be considered objectively "good". Whether they will have synergies with users' preferences and applications is the subjective part to me.
Then again, there are the 60%+ or so of headphone market that thinks Monster/Beats are the cat's meow of "audiophile" sound LOL Regardless, I will read the study and see what shakes out.

LxJLthrI still find it very weird that HD6/7/8 are not the most, least, first or last colored headphones he has heard, and then comes out with this pretext out of left field about not finding them "worthy of reviewing for audiophiles".
I think he was in a bad mood that day + put off by the look or some funky mix of whatever factors there.

Valensilius_ZephyrusHow do these even sound? Can't be that colored since the X2 is incredibly colored and he gave that thing a glowing review. It's a good headphone for sure, but the HD7 can't be more colored could it?

AsteradragonThe X2 is very colored though, no getting around that. I know these will probably be something like a DT770 80ohm with less treble and stronger bass.
