OK, here's what I don't want to do: I don't want to ruin this drop, nor Massdrop's credibility. I love the site and generally love the products included in these drops, but I can't stand by while people potentially make a $60 dollar mistake.
While I'm certain this cable is well constructed, and uses premium components, I want to warn people about aftermarket cables such as this.
So no one thinks I'm talking out of my ass, I own several high-end headphones, including the HD-600, DT-990, MDR-SA5000, Fostex T50RP (modified), among others. I ordered a cable similar to this one years ago, and returned it immediately to the manufacturer (admittedly, a different manufacturer).
The problem is really only related to the type of sleeving material used in this cable. It's something called MDPC. Some of you PC modders might know this from doing custom sleeving. MDPC is a plastic braid. What this means, is that it isn't rubbery, it isn't soft like 550 chord; rather, it's hard and wire-like. It has memory. When dragged across a desk or piece of clothing, it makes a "zip" sound. All things you DON'T WANT IN A HEADPHONE CABLE. This is something we call "microphonics", and it's bad news for headphone wearers. If you want to hear a zipping sound translated through your headphones due to vibrations every time you crane your head from left to right while seated, then by all means, get this cable.
Again, I'm just speaking from experience. Buyer beware.
EvanFYI there are two types of nylon sleeving - monofilament (highly microphonic) and multifilament (minimal microphonics).
The maker would have to be pretty clueless to not know the difference and use mono.
EvanWell, that's certainly good to know, thanks. I was on the fence about whether an aesthetic upgrade would be worth $60, but if there's even a chance that microphonics will be a major issue like you say, that would be a deal-breaker. I think we need some more information here.
MingI thought of that, but if you take a very close look at the photos, and compare that to those of MDPC cable sleeving, you can see the sheen is identical, and the braids are 3-per winding. It's hard to think it's anything different.
EvanEvan, MDPC stands for "Million Dollar PC", it has nothing to do with sleeving material. What you're talking about is called nylon sleeving(as Ming has noticed).
