How does this compare to the NW-A45? Anyone have both and can make a good comparison?
iphone and beats all the way yall.
Kind of surprising it only supports 192 and no 2.5mm headphone jack?? Strange??

i am not sure what DAP you are talking about
Just get m0, best sound from all the Ms, powerful amp too, takes Pinnacle easy, sounds great with Audio Technika 50x, amazing with Dune 2000j. I have m1 but use it only as transport with Centrance DACportabl.

how is the bass on m0? is the sound more bright, warm or balanced?
blazer39
For my taste it is very balanced, I am not a basshead but you can use EQ to adjust frequencies levels, again I do not use EQ:). As a summery, I tried all Ms, even bought M1 as transport (M0 was not produced yet) but love and listen as it is only M0 (besides other DAPs I own).
For those of you pining for the M0. While it's a very nice sounding little player, the lack of tactile controls on such a small device is a major issue for most people (especially guys).
I could see teenage Japanese girls becoming adept with it but I spent 2 days with the M0 before i returned it. WAY too much work to do anything with other than hit Play and leave it be.

I had the same experience with M0. It sounds incredible, but the small size and only having the touch screen to work with made it ultimately not worth it. It didn't help that the touch screen didn't seem to respond when I thought I was hitting the right spot. Unfortunately, the M0 has the best DAC in the Shanling lineup currently (I think, haven't checked in a while). Need to wait for them to release some larger, more yieldly products.
M3s pls :)
will a pioneer 300k or a Sony 2018 model on amazon power 250 - 300 ohm cans?
Come on man, get the shanling M0!!!!!!
A) it should come in Space Grey. B) they should include a watchband.
RayF
Nah, that's the M0
very poor sound quality, get Shanling M0
tacit57
i hear the m0 actually sounds like crap com pared to the rest. Wonder if you can link to any m0 comparisons that back up what you say about it being the best sounding shanling because i can't find any.

After many years of experience with electronics (I am electronics engineer) I do not rely on reviews anymore, I look sometimes on Amazon or here at Massdrop where people freely express their impressions, they are mostly not bribed by industry. Besides I have musical education (piano) and trust my hearing more than anything else, also I spend at least couple hours listening new device on specially selected tracks to get thorough impression. What I read is that people are annoyed by M0 UI, it is difficult to us for people with big hands, mine are just regular and I have no problem at all. However, taste and music choice and hearing vary greatly - therefore all my advice is IMHO:).
This is a piece of GARBAGE. It's hard to turn on. Sometimes I have to fiddle with it for a very long time to just to get it to turn on. It often suddenly drops recognition of a micro-sd card that it's already using. I then have to take the card out, re-insert, and reboot. Also when the unit is charging, it's almost impossible to get it to play. You have to charge it fully and then unplug the usb cable before it will play. GARBAGE. With the money I've spent on lousy Chinese units like this, I could have bought a nice Sony. The problem is that all or most Sonys now available won't play from a memory card, and for me that's a deal breaker. So I remain a pathetic sucker, shelling out for one garbage Chinese unit after another until I find one that works....

I laughed out-loud!!! I'm not laughing at your misfortune and frustration, but it's just hilarious the way you worded it!

Sounds like Sony picked up on the Apple strategy of big profit: storage. For years I've always said the best job in he word is the guy that runs the division in Apple responsible for storage on their mobile devices. Apple easily charges 3X+ over RETAIL for storage upgrades. I would guess Sony is doing the same.
Got mine and sometimes when I turn on the screen, it states battery is low but a second or 2 later, it shows full battery or the correct battery level. However sometimes, even though I have full battery, it'll show the low battery notification then shut off. I can power it right back up and it'll show the full battery status. I don't mind the notification but I do mind that it sometimes completely shuts down the player. I listen to mostly EDM sets which are usually an hr+ which is very annoying when it completely shuts down and I lose my place in the mix. Anyone else experience the low battery notification when it's not valid?
*update* Emailed support and they gave me a link to firmware 3.4 which fixed the battery issue.
Anyone know if this thing has any sort of IPX rating? Is it at all water-resistant? Thanks in advance.
Xylos
No it is not
I got the Shanling M1 in a previous drop, and within about 6 months, the battery exploded. Massdrop support pointed me at Shanling, and Shanling support was completely unresponsive after three attempts to contact them. So if you do get in on this, be aware that you may be left on your own if something goes wrong.
Photos of the ruptured battery on my M1 (swelling was so bad it broke through the back cover. Zero damage to the rest of the unit, so it wasn't dropped, crushed, or anything like that. https://imgur.com/a/NKBfgis

I've tried the alternate e-mail listed on the Shanling site. Thanks.
flarp
The alternate address worked. I appreciate your reply, but at this point, I'm going just cut my losses on this one. It isn't worth it to me to pay another $50 to repair the broken player. Thanks.
Does the M2s have the same Hiby quirk where all external playlists are ignored by the "My Music-M3UList" menu, but work in the File Browser menu? Also, is there bookmarking for long audio tracks, such as podcasts?
AndySocial
Yes, M3u playlists shows only in folder mode. No bookmarking function unfortunately.
Shanling-Frankie
It does make me wonder why the M3UList includes no m3u lists. The Hiby developers work in mysterious ways.
Thanks for the info.
Nice to see a Shanling DAP, but I really want the M3s so will wait to see if Massdrop will negotiate a drop on that one. If they do then I am in.

Shanling m3s has great but shrink? (not native English) soundstage, you can hear many instruments you didnt notice before but the voice is most of times back without impact... it makes me think it is designed for iems..
4.8 Ohms on output is discouraging. Of course it's not very bad, but not perfect for 16 Ohms IEM's. What the heck, is it a mobile DAP or you are supposed to stack it with amplifier and use high impedance headphones.
I've joined the drop. I already have one of these and I'm very happy with it. But then I use it in a very specific way, as a jukebox in my car. I have one large playlist named WRON for "Radio Ron" with everything I want to hear cherry picked from my collection on shuffle play. That's all I normally do with it. I will use the 2nd one in a similar way, to source my dining room/kitchen system (music to cook/eat/entertain with). I will also take it on vacation to drive my Soundmatters Foxl bluetooth speaker. It'll be a nice compact transportable system, and AptX to boot.
I think the scroll wheel is a bit tedious for moving through the long playlist, but I don't need to do it very often. For navigating my folders (Genre/Artist/Album) it's fine. I also think the scroll wheel is a potential point of mechanical failure but again, I don't use it much. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't like touch sensitive controls (e.g., Cayin N3) as much, especially doing "no look" while driving.
I like the sound of the unit. I don't know if it's the AK4490 DAC I like the sound of, or the implementation, but it's a nice, full sound, detailed but not etched. It will drive the HD6XX adequately but I seldom use it that way as I don't consider the HD6XX portable. When I use it with my HD6XX, I run it line out into a Vali 2 running one of my 6F8G tubes to drive them and it sounds great.
The Shanling M1 sounded pretty mediocre, so no reason to believe this will do any better. But hey, you get all these great inaudible formats support, so good for them.

Head-Fi.org has a lot of reviews for Shanling M2S, this is one of the best compact non-Android based players around. https://www.head-fi.org/showcase/shanling-m2s-ak4490eq-mini-bluetooth-dsd256-hifi-lossless-music-player.22354/reviews#reviews and https://www.head-fi.org/threads/shanling-m2s-hi-res-dap-with-ak4490-muse8920-bluetooth-usb-out.843643/
Whether hi-resolution audio sounds audible or not is a matter of one's ears and equipment, but you have a point here, the upper 108dB SNR and DR of 108dB corresponds with max bit depth/sampling rates of 24/96. Though, it does not mean that anything above it is just for convenience, there's a lot more in DSD and DXD sound than just sampling rates.
seems expensive to me - no WiFi ?- can the output be to bluetooth head set ? (I know I lose fidelity but for ease of use I prefer BT connections)...

FYI, it can transmit Bluetooth AptX but not receive.
In fact I prefer my $15 Mpow BT receiver audio quality over the M2s as BT receiver.
Most people probably won't use it that way, but I was going to stream Spotify from my phone while at the gym.
I will say I haven't had the issues others, mine powers on stays on and battery dissent explode. It sound pretty good for it's price range. Only reason I don't really use it is because I like using Spotify and the only way to do that is via streaming from my phone and that's just didn't sound as good. I have a new, higher end DAP, that runs Android and works with streaming services.

It has bluetooth, and one of the best!
I have one of these. It's nice, but I hate the UI. It takes a long time to navigate the menus, especially when you have a large music library.
wolf-math
If you use the previous/next buttons on side of M2s, you can jump even through large library in seconds.
Anyone know if this is powerful enough to drive Senheisser 6xx?
tweaver7777
No, nowhere even close.
tweaver7777
check out the headfi forums, there are mixed reviews about this daps capability to drive high impedance cans. the 4.8 ohm output impedance isn't helping matters either. lack of a dedicated line-out is disappointing.
Does it allow playing TIDAL, Spotify or other Streaming Service ?

Thanks for the clarification !

I'm pretty sure it does support AptX which can stream from tidal from a smartphone to the player. I think it's done through the Hiby Link software. Basically turning the device into a wireless dac/amp.
