RominI don't know if you've noticed, but this is the audiophile section not the "i casually listen to music"-section. Some people really love this and would go very far for the right hardware and the right experience. (I'd love to see this piece of tech cheaper too though...)

GahlekzisI don't "casually listen to music ", but not gonna pay that much for an unknown Chinese brand player just cause it has built in DAC.
Edit: Also would bet my old rooted Android phone with ViperFX and a sub $50 DAC has the same quality.

RominFirst off all....just because you don't know Shanling doesn't mean they are unknown. Second of all...all players have a built in DAC and amp....higher quality players just have higher quality internals which makes quite a large difference. And finally, this player is relatively cheap, no more than buying a 128gb iPod or smartphone. Try going to an Astell & Kern thread and arguing your point, people spend thousands on those!

RominWe're in 2016, dedicated music players have come a LONG way since iPods and Sans Clips. The internal components and configurations are leagues above the standards of even the stringent Apple iPod standards.
The reason this Dedicated Music Player is better is due to a variety of factors. 1) No Touchscreen: A player not having a touchscreen may sound like a bummer, but in reality, touchscreens utilize so much processing power which is already a scarce commodity in a portable devices. There is more to this, but I will elaborate further later. 2) No multitasking: Dedicated music Players are exactly that, they simply play music. They don't have to receive emails, browse the internet, stream YouTube videos, send and receive text messages, etc, etc.. once again more to this but I will explain later.. 3) Internal Components: Dedicated Music Players have internal components that have been tested and proven to be superior to your standard components found in smartphones. They have Low-Pass Filters, Buffers, amplifies, and Digital to Analog chips (DAC's) that the majority of the audiophile community has experimented and rolled till their ears were sent to auditory heaven. 4) Implementation: This is where it all comes together.. Having all the internal components is like having a Football player that can ace the combine in every category.. just because they can run a 40-yd dash in 4 seconds flat doesn't mean they will know where they are going with all that speed. In addition, having all the components working together in perfect synergy helps, but you also need clean power sources and minimum variation in processor speeds, and minimal Electro-Magnetic Interference (EMI). Which can be introduced by Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Cellular signals. Therefore, if a player doesn't have them, the better off the signal to noise will be. The Shanling M5 has all of the above factors that are beneficial in producing the perfect sound every time you load your favorite song, and has the power to power almost any set of cans you wish. Sure there are other players that have more bells as whistles, hence why they cost more, however, remember what I said, by introducing Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Cellular services, you will introduce unnecessary EMI into the sound signal. I truly believe that for $400 there isn't a player on the market that can compete with how clean of a signal this produces.

aman1420Unknown? Shanling is a known brand around headfi. To untrained ears yes the setup you mentioned might sound the same. If you were more than a casual listener you would be aware of the m5 reputation. Regardless, do your research before bashing a brand. Better yet just move on if you don't want to buy it.
