It's going to be a long wait until June 8. Just got some Jamo c93 bookshelves, and nothing to drive them. Excitement!

Cookster997I ordered the c93, too. I missed this drop, though. are you thinking we'll need a sub with the c93's, bc this amp doesn't have room for a sub?

KidklugWell, you are sorta asking two questions.
Firstly, it depends. How much low end do you want? I don't plan to use a sub right now. The 6 inch driver should be good enough for the room size and music I wil have. Maybe I'll get a sub eventually? But right now I don't need one.
And, you're right. This amp doesn't have a dedicated sub out. However, as long as you get the right subwoofer, they will come with passthroughs, so you can do speaker wire from amp to subwoofer in, then from subwoofer out to speakers. Otherwise, you could put two wires into the amp outputs or the subwoofer terminals, and just have them both connected that way. If you would like images to describe this, I can find some.
Long story short, you don't need a dedicated sub out to use a sub, and you might want to wait on a sub until you are sure you want one.

Cookster997Nice! That sounds like a plan. I just ordered the c93's tonight so I haven't actually heard them. I am hoping the 6" speakers will put out some nice bass. Have you plugged them up yet with anything? Going on a review, I also purchased some RBH R5Bi speakers to compare to the Jamo's, then resell whichever. From what I understand they are pretty comparable, but couldnt resist. I got excited about the idea of a new stereo. Thanks for the advice on the passthrough.

KidklugI got them today, but I don't really have much to connect them to until my AD18 arrived. Sounds like you watch Z Reviews, if you were interested in the RBH. I almost got those, but I couldnt get over the looks of the Jamos. He actually put out a review of the C93s to his Patreon which will go public whenever. One comment I think applies to us is that he said they have "close to Buchardt" low end. So, plenty.

KidklugHey man. Plug anything in yet? I was able to mess around with one of my dad's old Sony stereo receivers. The Jamo's sound... wow. Really nice. With a very subtle bass boost, I am convinced there is a small subwoofer on, and without it, there is still a good amount of low end, plenty for most music. The only time you would really want a sub, in my opinion, is if you listened to a lot of music with heavy sub bass, or home theater stuff.
How are the RBHs?

Cookster997I'm still waiting on the AD18. I ordered last Sunday and it's in Singapore. I hooked up both the Jamos and RBH's up to 2.0 receiver with 100 watts x 2. I want to like the RBH's. They are super clear and crisp, really great! I want to like the R5Bi, but am sticking with the Jamos. The Jamos have more depth. They look great. They are $699 new, so being refurbished from brownbox for $230, is a really good deal. We made the right choice. Now I'm hoping the AD18 has lots of good power. I maxed out the cheap receiver and the Jamos could use mo powa.

KidklugHopefully you'll get it before me!
I can't get over the look of the Jamos. The RBHs are nice looking, but that wood and those circles around the drivers... Smooth. I just wish I could have gotten one of the stained wooden finishes.
I know what you mean about them wanting more power. It seems like they just guzzle it up, with no problem. How did you like the low end? Think you'll get a sub?

Cookster997The low end is really good! I don't really know if the 100watts of cheap insignia (NS-STR514) power can get better. Does the source of amp power really make a big difference? I can't get a sub right now, but probably eventually. Would you get a sub first or the Jamo Center?

KidklugWhat do you mean, source of amp power? I have a feeling the "100 watts" isn't really clean past 40 or 50 watts if it's that cheap. From what I can tell, the AD18's 80 watt rating isn't fully clean either, but that's apparently to be expected with digital amps.
Shit. That's a good question. For me, I would probably do a sub, since I don't plan on using the Jamo's in a big home theater right now. However, if I was planning on that, I would definitely go for a center. It would be key for linking the voices to the screen, especially for off center viewing.

Cookster997"Source" only meaning coming from a cheap amp vs any other amp. And particular the AD18. I don't know much about watt rating, so I guess it does matter from what you're saying. How do you determine a good watt rating being clean?

KidklugMm.. you're asking the wrong guy. I don't know a ton either. Watt ratings can be very hit and miss, depending on what the company defines as a safe signal during testing and whatnot. Cheap amps definitely will have trouble delivering more power without distortion compared to good amps. It seems like the SMSL can get pretty loud before going to crap. Plus, the Jamo's are pretty efficient, so I would think the AD18 should be pretty good.

KidklugUpdate: AD18 has more than enough power for the Jamo C93 bookshelves, I haven't turned up the volume past 22 because it's so darn loud. Using the SDB - EQ I've had to turn the Bass down to -1dB to watch tv/movies. For music it does sound good to turn up the Bass to 2dB. I'm still needing to find out what works best for switching btw tv and music. I like the AD18, but it is going to take some time to figure out. I did post a question on Reddit, Klug83 : https://www.reddit.com/r/BudgetAudiophile/comments/5o9bm8/anyone_have_experience_with_the_smsl_ad18/ To figure out a buzzing problem while using the optical in via toslink.
