Hoping someone could help a brother out:
Already tried asking this question on the interwebs but no one seemed to notice.
I'm a budding audiophile and I want to start small, and by small I meant portable/mobile DACs to be used with phones. I have my eyes on either this (SMSL Icon) or the HIFIMe Sabre USB. Note that the sound will be coming from an iP7 and would be coursed through an iem. (I might get a NuForce too and am currently waiting for the hyped chifi KZ ZST Pro. )

mylightersidewell the sabre and the SMSL are pretty different for their uses. honestly if you're going to get a USB DAC, I would go with the red dragonfly because then you won't need another one again (diminishing returns after that), instead of buying a cheaper one now, and then buying another one later (you will, we all have). The SMSL isn't bad, it's just not great either, understand that for the money, you're getting the ultimate portability, with a bit of sacrifice on the DAC/Amp quality. If you plan on buying power hungry cans, you will end up needing more than just this in the future. But for the KZ ZST, either option are more than enough. I'm not just sure why you want to compare a USB device to a Lightning DAC/Amp.

mylightersideI agree with @fezzyness . Go Dragonfly Black. As I said earlier in thread, I use a Fiio K1. It's a cheaper than the dragonfly, but not as good. (I have a Dragonfly 1.2 which is too power hungry for a mobile setup). You could wait for something that will offer lightning in for dual charging or audio control. But the Dragonfly will be an excellent listening experience.

ChadDubhey @fezzyness and @ChadDub, I appreciate the replies.
It's just that I don't want to shell out *that money* YET. But I would take into consideration the Dragonfly ones.

mylightersideI mean I did the same thing, just giving you advice based off of a lesson i learned myself. I made budget purchases and then when I wanted to upgrade I realized that it would have cost me less if I had just started at mid level, I wouldn't have spent so much money and time (reviews, prices, different deals), yet still be using the same equipment. the good thing about decent audio equipment is that the resale market it great, and people trade around their gear so they don't have to keep buying new things just to experience it. Meanwhile the smaller budget audio equipment... not many people want to buy it, let alone purchase it used. Sorry for the lost post, just my two cents.

mylightersidei currently use a oppo ha2 for portable and a aune x1s and I am going to get this there are going to be times u are willing to sacrifice on audi quality for true portability. To me this will be worth it. it will be good for things like riding my bike where the ha2 is a massive pain.
