I'd be very interested in how this sounds different than the old M8.
I received my M8 from a previous drop a few months ago, and it's been very good.
I actually use it to convert the digital signal from my TV.
Because it doesn't have a remote control on/off function, the screen saver function has been a godsend.
I leave it on 24/7 and don't have to worry about the screen burning out.
I think it will sound a bit worse.
Nobody that I know owns both.
Probably will sound no different from the old M8 since much of the circuitry is the same. Also, not sure if you can hear the difference in SNR if you are listening to Redbook CDs. 117 dB in SNR is still better than most high end DACs, say the Chord Mojo (marginally, on paper) which many described as very clean. It certainly still beats the ODAC in specs which plenty consider transparent.
Okay I actually do own both now and I think that the newer M8A is actually worse other than that it runs super cool due to the entire inside being a nice heatsync now. Which I imagine will affect the longevity of the device by a good amount.
Otherwise I see no reason to buy the M8A.
