Trosa, the LoFReQ actually doesn't increase anything, it simply is a microphone with a different focus range than most traditional mics. Using this type of transducer can be documented as far back as the recording of "Paperback Writer" by Sir Paul. Drummers like Questlove use the same process nightly to gather more of the frequency range their instrument (specifically his kick drum) produces that traditional microphones are not designed to focus on. As far as usefulness with different equipment is concerned, the biggest differences are noticeable when using subs and in headphones, but that's truly up to the engineer, as this mic is really nothing more than a different paint brush to paint a sonic landscape. In both recording and live sound reinforcement applications, the LoFReQ is currently being used by Grammy winners, studio and live engineers, touring bands and even recording hobbyists. Reproduction of 25hz is generally not what they are looking for as much as capturing the total range of frequencies produced by the sound source. I hope this helps!
Everybody dealing with mic stands should have a few sandbags on hand. They are cheap and very useful.
This is a live recording (master stereo out, no adjustments) of a church service that used a Lofreq almost on the reso and a D112 at the batter around 1.5 inches in the shell, placed on some acoustic wool. The drums are a set of Gretsch Renown African Mahogany and the kick is a 22x18 with an Evans EMAD Clear skin and a stock reso.
The D112 has a 24db/octave HPF at 600Hz so all the punch and boom is from the Lofreq.
Don't expect a Lofreq to give you a usable amount of snap.

Thanks for posting the audio link Senny! Yes, the LoFReQ is really intended to focus on the lower frequencies, and using it in conjunction with another kick mic (like the 112) is a pretty standard implementation. Glad to see (and hear) you're getting some good use out of it!
Dear gearheads and recording enthusiasts,
We are proud to once more offer the Solomon MiCS LoFreq Kick Drum Sub Microphone. This mic is designed specifically for capturing every boom and thwack of your kick drum. This is a truly unique mic, not readily available everywhere and we are glad to be able to bring it to you again.

I do speaker reviews and use my Tascam DR40 to record demo's and it doesn't have enough low end pickup. Would a set of speakers playing at "normal" volume be enough to make this microphone a worthwhile investment? I see it is right up against a bass drum so I imagine you would need to put it close to the speakers or subwoofer to really record properly.

Pulled the trigger on the Tascam DR-44WL here yesterday. How will these work with the former and the ideal settings required?
I recording music playing from my hifi system and have a feeling the Tascam will not be able to pick-up the low-ends. Trying to convince myself to spend another $145 (Singapore) just to record sub-bass.

Thanks for the question nimoSG. The variable here, much like ZeosPantera's is the output level of your source. It sounds like the hifi system you mentioned could be set to produce enough volume to balance well with the LoFReQ. I would assume there would have to be some balancing done between the condenser mics and the LoFReQ, but the DR44WL appears to have all the bells and whistles to make it work. Please let us know how it works out!
Guess I couldn't resist being the one to hit the final marker. :)

Thanks man!! Appreciate the support!
Well said rollthetape. I agree, the Crown CM311 is a pretty stellar headset mic, and certainly better for that specific application.
Whimis, The design of this mic lends best to high spl (sound pressure level) applications, like kick drum and floor toms, bass and guitar amps, cajon, etc. Keep in mind that this is intended to work alongside another mic, with the intent of gathering the lower frequencies with your LoFReQ, and then blended together for a boomier, full range sound. Check out the website www.solomonmics.com for more information on uses as well as sound clips. Thanks!
Are their any reviews on this?, could it be used as a voice over mic (game streaming) in a pinch?
Whimis
If you're looking for an inexpensive VO mic, the AT2020 from Audio Technica is a decidedly fantastic microphone at a pretty great price.
Whimis
I would not recommend this mic for recording vocals. The diaphragm is very large and designed to pick up very loud sub frequencies way below and louder what the human voice produces. How close will you be having this voice over mic? the further away it is the more room sound it will let in, that bare plaster slap, unless you have a dead sounding room or a broadcast studio? I recommend what drummers use as they're in a similar situation to a gamer if you think about it. Crown CM311 headset mic.
