Yeah, this is a good price on these cameras. Especially the II.
I have both the original and the II. They are great. The image quality on my II is better, but strangely it takes a bit longer to lock onto focus. So a number of blurry action shots on the II that the original camera could otherwise successfully get. But that might just be the specific camera I have.
The newer models eschew the hotshoe. But I got the II with hotshoe when it came out specifically to sync it up with an off camera flash. I've gotten it to sync up to 1/1000 second with a wireless flash controller, but have been too busy to really iron out the quirks and nail it down.
The point being the leaf shutter can sync with the off camera flash over a wide range of shutter speeds, unlike in a focal plane shutter camera which might have only one sync speed (this limits how much outboard flash exposure control you ultimately have with a focal plane shutter camera).
I figure with the leaf shutter able to sync over a range of speeds up to 1/1000 sec, one can control the foreground/background lighting ratios on two fronts:
One would adjust the shutter/sync speed to control for background exposure (since the flash exposure hitting the foreground subject would remain the same over the sync range, and changing shutter speed would only affect the exposure of the distant background).
One would then control the foreground subject exposure in the front of the shot by adjusting the aperture and flash power settings. Just like you can on a Fuji X100s.
One issue using a flash this way is that there is no on-screen preview of the flash shot. So if you are trying to shoot a flash shot in a dark location using the required manual mode, you really won't be able to see anything but a dark screen. You'll only be able to study the shot after it's been taken. Using a flash this way is kind of a hack, and Sony hasn't built in any kind of support for using this type of flash application as far as I know.
Quriky, but good stuff!

K.T.NFor those that want small but DSLR-like but of similar form factor, consider the Sony a5100 or a6000. I've been using mine and I love it. That being said, I might jump boat when the RX100 X comes out.
