There seems to be 3 classes of photographers here in MD. Casuals/Beginner, Enthusiasts, and Professionals. I'm wholely centered in the middle category, wherein as long as my photos look good overall, I'm not going to worry about small details that a professional or higher level enthusiast would. I believe it's the person behind the camera that makes the shot and not the gear itself.
Look, this is a kit lens. One that Sony charges an extra $100 for to get. If you already own an extensive lens collection, then you probably don't need this. There's only a handful of scenarios that I could see people wanting to get this lens.
1) You purchased a cheap Sony camera body online and need a lens that won't terribly break the bank.
Pretty Self Explanatory. If you just want to dabble in photography and you purchased a cheap E-mount off Ebay that didn't include a lens, then this isn't too bad of a deal. People will complain that it's a terrible lens, but from my use it's not a bad lens to just dip your toes in.
2) You want a somewhat versatile compact camera setup.
Sometimes, people just want a nice point and shoot experience with their camera. This lens, with it's size and zoom capabilities, makes it a fairly fun shooter for nice casual photography (i.e. going on a roadtrip or visiting a museum, where the main purpose is not to take photos.) This is the primary reason I keep this lens in my collection instead of selling it off for dirt cheap.
3) You're just curious of how "bad" this lens is.
Obviously, this lens is NOT really geared towards professionals and higher level enthusiasts. However, some people would make it sound like this is the worst lens ever. For what you pay for and for what you get (OSS, AF, PowerZoom) I think it's a nice little package.
So should you buy it? Well if you don't cover at least one of the three possible scenarios I listed above I would say no. Or you could always buy it used. Are these amazing lenses? No, of course they're not. But I wouldn't say they're absolute garbage either. Some people can get some GREAT shots of this lens, just need to work a bit harder for them
Anyways, that's my 2 cents on the matter. I'm sure some people will disagree with some of my statements but overall that's just my opinion on the lens. I'm open to discuss things in a civil manner if wanted.

Dragon1291Thank you for your two cents! I'm in the super begginer category so I'm still a bit hesitant to really drop money on something I'm not 100% sure I'll like. But you explained the lense really well.

Bad lens, super mediocre price. If you don't already own this lens, the ONLY reason you should buy it is if you need an acceptable, compact lens that's cheap. Image corners are softer than velvet.

Is this actually handled by Sony? I can't believe genuine Sony quality control would let a new lens out the door without both the front and rear lens caps.
This, plus the fact that it came in an unlabeled brown cardboard box that clearly was not made for the lens (too big) makes me wonder if these are some third party refurbs.
Super sketchy. At least the lens mount looks new and unused.
I'm going to take it up with Massdrop. Now I don't have a rear lens cap to cover the unused lens that I swap out.
I was expect at least front and rear lens caps on a lens that's supposed to be new. Wow.

I have never found the loss of image quality is never worth the size and weight advantage of this lens. Personal preference. I bought one for my a6500, and it’s a lens cap.

I'm not clear why anyone would buy this new. It's their kit on a lot of models and the better models will want better lenses than these. The only benefit I've found is ability to use power zoom remotely. If you really need it, but it used for super cheap.

jilgilI already own this lens. I've used it for 2.5 years and taken thousands of images with it. I may join this drop so I have a spare for when the original lens breaks or I wear it out. The combination of the A6XXX body with this lens is brilliant. No, it's not my only lens. No, the A6000 is not my only camera.

This is Sony's kit lens for their APS-C e-mount bodies.
It got a very bad reputation when it was released because many of the older e-mount bodies did not have a lens profile for it(no longer an issue since lens profiles are built into every recent e-mount body, or can be applied in lightroom).
Overall this is a decent kit lens. It has some above average center sharpness, and it gets even better when stepped down. The main point of this lens, however, is the compact size. Nothing else really comes close. This makes it an extremely good lens for a "walk-around" set-up or for vacations. It isn't going to outperform a Canon L, Sony G Master, or even some of the better kit lenses (including Sony’s own 18-55 e-mount lens), but it will give you pretty good image quality in a compact package. Search for Kurt Munger's review of the lens if you want a more detailed review.
That said, this price is pretty mediocre. It can be found for close to $100 grey market on e-bay, and only slightly more on amazon.
Also keep in mind that this lens is for crop (APS-C) cameras. While you can use it on cameras from the a7 series, it is sort of a waste because the lens doesn't use the entire sensor, just the same area that would be used on a crop camera.

acceptable, if its a kit len yes. if u going out your way to purchase one. Im seriously wondering why not just didnt grab a point and shoot. not like the difference would be noticeable. I understands its position as a lens. but it still seriously sucks. the sony 18-55mm is easily a better choice. and has manual zoom so you know it actually doesn't have to load that power zoom which is so much like a point and shoot anyways.
Oh if I want compact Ill grab a 16mm pancake emount and crop to get some "zoom" would do the job better and is slimer.
tldr: I'm just saying this drop ain't worth purchasing.

Fukuropeople should buy if they want. But if they are into photography, stop if they thinking purchasing this kit lens is a good idea.
Get a sigma 30mm f2.8 for 50 usd more.
If you aren't why do u have an interchangeable camera? grab a nice rx100 would service u nicely(that is if u want to purchase this lens).

Loved having this lens, made my A7 into a carry around for snapshots camera. I wouldn't use it for a paid job, but it is a nice fairly sharp lens for trips and personal use. Or as the internet would say, "Great for "Street Photography" and great as a "Backup" lens!"

As long as u get it as a kit lens. its fine, but not purchasing this thing and u put it on a full frame emount thats fine, but kinda of a waste.

This is the kit lens for the sony Alpha 6xxx cameras. While it's a nice lens especially when packaged with the camera it's not worth over 300$.
It's small light weight and fairly versitle however low light performance is mediocre or poor. At 3.5 don't expect much by way of bokeh if thas your thing. I have one of these myself and while on a bright well lit day for casual shooting and video it's ok don't expect to much out of it. There have been exceptions to this and yes you can get some surprisingly good results from the lens but it's safe to say the lens is pretty mediocre. Check Adorama and B&H for this lens they tend to sell it at a cheaper price but not always.
