I would possibly pay this much for the z1r. But $500 for the z7 is laughable.

HealerTCGYou'd possibly pay $500 for a pair of headphones that retail for $1700? Possibly?

WildMurphFor you, maybe. The z7 has a ridiculous amount of bass exaggeration. I guess if you're looking for something "fun" its fine. But there are less expensive options to get that kind of signature. Z1r is better but in the same neighborhood with similar tuning. Honestly worth about $500 for ME. Hd6xx kills both of those for way less money.

HealerTCGYou obviously don't know what you are talking about... They have a great sound signature. Different but awesome. Not completely neutral, but that is not always a bad thing. I own multiple different pairs of cans for different uses, and I love my z7 for what they are. Keep your biased, narrow viewed, shitty taste to yourself

WildMurphAnd you are exactly right. I'll keep enjoying my hd6xx (often considered the best buy in the hobby ever) and you keep enjoying your overpriced fart cannons :-)

WildMurphHe'd possibly buy them if Sony took a $1000 loss on every pair. Possibly.

HealerTCGThe z7 has a ridiculous amount of bass exaggeration” - That’s an “exaggerated” statement. Even I admit that the bass is prominent. But it depends on the recording. As good quality as possible will provide a great sound over the Z7. You should also use a good headphone amp. You do for sure, otherwise you don't know the real potential of a HD6XX ;-)
Hd6xx kills both of those for way less money” - You can’t compare those two different headphones (HD6XX / Z7). Open against closed. A very neutral headphone against a headphone that delivers very enjoyable music no matter which genre. HD6XX is much more difficult to drive (300 Ohm). It is by far not so comfortable like the Z7, not to say that the HD6XX can give some bigger heads a feeling of being clamped in the bench vice. HD6XX build quality is far away from that from Z7 and far away being high end (check the headband, earpads, cable, cable inputs etc.). If you compare the whole package, the Z7 wins in every aspect.
And you are exactly right. I'll keep enjoying my hd6xx (often considered the best buy in the hobby ever) and you keep enjoying your overpriced fart cannons :-)” Every headphone sounds different. There are a lot of people who are considering a HifiMan HE-1000 as best buy or a Sennheiser HD 800 or a Audioquest Nighthawk…. Why are so many people go for HD6XX? Not only because it sounds very good and the massdrop price was a bargain, but it’s a headphone that is on the market for a very long time and it has an excellent reputation. And the reputation was built in a time period where barely competitors were there like nowadays! The Z7 is in comparison very new and not known at all. It is made in Japan from where one really gets an excellent quality (Fostex, Denon, Stax...). One can always discuss if the price is acceptable for someone or not. Everything is relative. So it depends on the money you have available for such a hobby. Only if you own some other headphones like Z7 and have the possibility to compare them directly for a while, you can write a serious review. But not from hearing and reading of others (“often considered the best buy in the hobby ever”). This being said, let me repeat again. The Z7 is an excellent headphone for “listening music”. Don’t make it to a bad headphone because the price offered by massdrop is not a bargain and seems too high for you. If amazon is cheaper then go for it. Cheers

HealerTCGI have both HD650 and Z7 and the the Z7 is much much better for classicalmusic and other art music genres. I've used three different amps and two DACs to compare. Ergonomically the Sony's are also much better than the Senns. They're more comfortable and feel lighter on the head even though they are said to way a bit more. The Z7 is also made of better materials. There's a 120 page Modding manual circulating online for the Z7 that features inexpensive options that improve the sound by dampening resonances in the ear cups with tape you can buy off Amazon for a couple bucks. So the bass can be tightened very easily if that were a problem. The bass does not sound bloated or farty out of a Magni 3 unmodded.
