I spent full price for this gizmo a few months ago, after quite a bit of research and agony. It is clearly not for everyone, but here are things I like about it: - small - long battery life - huge capacity; it comes with 64g out of the box, and you can add sd cards up to 128g, for total system storage of 192g. This means no more negotiation with my phone's limited and shared storage, or iTunes, or Google Music, or whatever service, about how and under what circumstances I get to listen to any one of my thousands of songs. They are all there, all the time. - it integrates all storage (device and sd card) into single library - NO FILE NUMBER LIMIT - the library is easily, intuitively searchable by artist, album, title, etc - it has an fm tuner! - no touch screen. I find touch screens on tiny music devices a major pain in the ass for the following reasons: I live in the north, and cannot use in winter because gloves, even the "touch compatible" ones since the screen is so tiny; separately I cannot leave unlocked in pocket because of crazy accidental screen interaction. - sound is pretty good. I am demanding listener, and won't pretend its "omg so amazing!!1!"It sounds better than many other portable players. It sounds at least as good as my iphone 5s, and isn't my phone (see above). When I am using this for true portability (walking, running, biking, commuting), it fits easily in my pocket and capably drives my IEMs. When I am sitting somewhere listening, I use an amp. The line-out cable is cheap ($15), and the line signal is clean. Into an amp of your choice, selected to drive the headphones of your choice, the permutations are many.
I kind of wish it had wifi, and I recognize there are players that can do more than this sonically (standing alone, no amp), but they suffer from the following limitations: between 2 to 7 times the MSRP; less overall storage; severely limited battery life. For me, feature set / price on the A17 is impressive.
