Why would anyone use this over their phone? How do you justify this price point?
This doesn't even have good audio hardware, 20mW is jack squat in terms of power. Good luck driving anything but an IEM properly with that.

autoteleologyBecause it sounds significantly better than a phone?

ChangeIsGoodNot if you put an amp and a DAC onto it, which you could purchase for less than this. Sure, it makes your phone bigger, but either way you're still carrying around multiple devices.

ChangeIsGoodNot really, in fact the iPhone DAC is quite good, and the iPhone amp is lacking only in its ability to drive headphones with low SPL. If this thing can only output 20mW, it will have exactly the same problem. If you actually want an upgrade, the iBasso DX50 is much better for less money.

autoteleologyUhh, both the iPod Classic and Sansa Clip+ output are ~15mW into 16Ohm and they work fine. What would you expect from a portable player?

autoteleologyIt might be practical to have a unit with a dedicated battery for music alone, considering battery life on today's smart phones.

AnathalloYes, and both of those are terrible for driving anything but IEMs. I've owned both, Rockboxed. I could barely drive a Creative Aurvana Live, much less anything >32ohm.
Not to mention the Sansa Clip+ is $30 and pretty much any music-focused iPod <$150 these days. This is twice the price.

autoteleologyJust keep enjoying your phone brick stack, then. I don't see why you keep commenting here if this player is so inferior. Have you listened to the A17? Please tell me how terrible it is, then...

autoteleologyBarely drive an Aurvana Live? Both the clip+ and the iPod can drive the Aurvana Live to over 110dB.... and the Sony has more power..... You might want to be careful with the listening levels you're using on a portable player, you're going to go deaf.
Or maybe I just don't understand what gigantic, inefficient non-portable headphone you're trying to power with a tiny, portable player.

AnathalloLow ohm headphones are limited by current, not by voltage. Think about planars. Volume is more or less proportional to voltage, not current - it has little to nothing to do with this. If you have lots of voltage but little current, you're going to get a loud, but loose sound.

autoteleologyExactly my point? The A17 runs roughly 566mV and will drive your Aurvanas to ~115dB..... I have no idea why that isn't enough volume for you.
Please stop spreading misinformation to prospective buyers - you don't need 10W of Class A to power a portable setup. This player will be fine for majority of people that
- Don't want to drain their phone battery by listening to music - Hate how the output impedance of phones messes with the crossover of their multi-drive IEMs - Hate the EM interference from their phone's terrible analogue out - Don't want to carry around a 2lb stack of electronics with an external amp or DAC attached to their phone - Don't want to carry their phone while working out
Etc.. etc..

autoteleologyI wrote more than I originally meant to. tl;dr - high capacity and something dedicated to music, that's why I would use this over my phone.
I like having something dedicated to music. I don't really care about high res audio, storage is what I care about. I want a lot of storage without having to worry about all the space being taken up by dumbass apps and all the other stuff on my phone. It doesn't drain battery from a bunch of other nonsense going on in the background either, just from its core function. Phones are replaced frequently too. This is the first time I've actually HAD to replace my ipod nano in almost 8 years (and only because it was at my workplace during a fire). I have been meaning to move up in capacity but it hadn't given out yet where I absolutely had to. I don't want to have to resync ALL of my music every time I get a new phone (it's a lot and growing all the time). An expense like this will only be necessary a few times in my life whereas I'll probably go through countless phones so the price isn't really that awful. I don't know about the longevity of this one personally, but all the reviews I've read so far have only good stuff to say about it. I'm not saying I go out buying an individual device for each function smartphones have, but this is something I use so much that I want something dedicated to it. If that makes sense, it did in my head.
I also use earbuds, screw headphones.
