I have a question. Does the D100 have a favorites bin for Music tracks? Like most other DAP's have a playlist/favorites bin to select a file and add it to a quick access bin as a playlist or something? I don't even care about the mic recording qualities, I care about the audio quality of music playback. DSD/ flac and such. This unit will be used mostly for audiophile purposes for music listening. I got to hear it once briefly but never had the time to look into the menus. It sounded fantastic. If it has Playlist support, I will absolutely buy one.

Michael24bitAs much as I like my PCM-D50, I've never looked to see if it supported playlists. I looked at the PCM-D100 manual on-line and it doesn't say anything about them, so I would guess no. Besides, with the controls on the device, managing a large list of audio files would be a nightmare. I clear mine out (PCM-D50) after each use (recording) because navigating files is really an afterthought. You are aware that for about half the money you can choose from several portable DAP's that support DSD, right? iBasso and, I think, Cayin, to name two.

fredralphfredI own most of those daps, mate. I write for a Hifi review website. File managing on the Hifiman daps and a few others are basic bin layout without playlist support. I hate it, but I am used to it. I compared the D100 to the Cowon Plenue M and I thought the D100 sounded cleaner and more spacious. I wasn't sure if I was nuts or if I had been roofied just prior, but I wanted to get the D100 for a proper review to compare it to the DX90, the Plenue M and similar nice portable players. Shame, it doesn't have Playlists, but I should be able to generate a 32gb internal storage only playlist that I'll have to manage. I wasn't able to get into the menu as I mentioned, so I don't even know if the D100 can track shuffle or if it even had an EQ on board. lol

Michael24bitOh! Well, I'm sure the sound quality is about as good as it gets (although the headphone output impedance of 16 ohms does bother me a bit -- high impedance headphones for you!). As long as you realize at least half the money you're spending is for features you won't be using (ADC, mic pre section, microphones) and are willing to set up cards like that, have a ball.
And if you do decide to record, keep in mind that you'll be using one of the best tools on the market for field recording. You'd have to spend thousands to better it. (Zoom has a 6-channel recorder for less, but it's not nearly as nice to use.)

fredralphfredIt would be a 90:10 ratio of listening to recording. I do record stuff, but not that often. If I owned the D100, I'd record A LOT more. :) As for the sound quality, it really impressed me with my Noble Audio K10customs. It felt good enough to warrant an attempt for a full review based purely on sound quality and usage purely as a portable music player. If Sony offered an update and just added one new feature: playlists, I'd be all over it for my personal DAP of choice.
