I bought this lens almost 5 years ago and loved it... Until it and about $10k worth of cameras and lenses were stolen. So I bought a whole 'nother bag and equipment, but this time I went with the Distagon T FE 35mm f/1.4 ZA. Great lens, great reviews, Fabulous!! Except I ended up hating that lens. Heavy, expensive, and... A complete lack of any soul or character; flat, technically correct but total lack of emotion. I had to buy another 35-2.8.
I still use the 35-1.4, always stopped down, for landscapes and such, WAY better resolution, but the 35-2.8 stays on my camera most of the time, even indoors in low light. The little Sonnar 35 paints a picture with the classic Zeiss pop and the bokeh is gorgeous and continues to convey a sense of depth as the scene goes out of focus, unlike the 1.4. This little plastic toy looking lens is my absolute favorite 35.
Vision21Those are usually gray-market lenses (international versions without a Sony warranty in the U.S.). Nothing wrong with them, as long as you understand what you're buying.
Edit: Looks like this one is an international version as well, so none, to address your question.
SurefireI had the Sigma 35 F1.4. Image quality was excellent all the way to the corners. Its hard to compare the 2 lens since the Sony starts at 2.8 and yes at 2.8 and beyond this lens is also excellent. So why did I return the Sigma?, well it weights too much and is not fun to carry around. Since I picked up a Sony 24/1.4 In January the Sony 35/2.8 works well in my kit when I need it. And the Sony 24/1.4 is much lighter at 15.7oz vs 1.47 lbs for the sigma.
This lens is absolutely fantastic.
Compact, fast autofocus, sharp, and no distortion or CA issues. Only possible complaint is that the aperture is a little low, but it isn't as much of an issue as you would expect on a lens this wide.
It is worth considering at full price, at a discount it is an easy choice.
