I'm a little bummed about this stove. On the plus-side it seems generally well made and designed. I like how smart the arm design is, the weight, and the wind resistance. It boils water super quickly.
Unfortunately, the valve is not as great as I thought it would be. It operates smoothly, and I love that you can't overtighten it, but I wonder if mine is slightly defective.
For one thing, pulling or pushing on the dial causes the flame to increase our decrease, which means there is play in the threading. Even my $13 Monoprice stove doesn't do that (but my cheap Etekcity did).
Even worse, when turning the dial, the flame control is inconsistent. If I light the stove at a low setting, let's call it 5% flame, and dial up, it'll go from 5% to 10%, to 15%, back down to 10%, and then continue on up. The same happens in reverse, and I think the same thing happens on the next full turn, but the flame is so high, it's hard to tell. This makes me believe the pin in the valve is misshapen. It isn't a huge deal, as I'm never going to cook at a temp that low, but it is disappointing. All I ever hear is how high quality these stoves are.
Also the piezo on this would be great if the contact were 1mm longer. I can always get the stove to light, but it usually takes a few clicks. Weight-wise it does well at 2.77oz/77 grams on my scale, which is less than the 2.9oz advertised.
Overall, it's a good stove, but after paying $36 and waiting 3+ weeks to get it I expected a little more.

JimboJonesGet in touch with Soto and they'll replace it for you. I'm not sure what would cause the play in the valve, looking at how the parts are made but there will always be some play in threaded parts until they are under tension even with super fine threading like what is on the parts here. Shouldn't be excessive though. I pulled mine out after reading this and it doesn't do this. Sometimes Soto will ask you to return the stove if they want to examine it for defects/QC issues but they'll replace it for you without question. The variance in flame is kinda normal with I think ever stove I've ever owned...seems worse in breezy conditions, which is probably caused by interruption of both the air/fuel ratio and the temperature/feedback. If you want you could remove the valve for a look, just try not to wipe off the lube and be careful when reinserting it so you don't damage or shift the rubber.

StepbystepThanks for the comment. You've downplayed the variance in flame issue, and that's actually my biggest issue. I have a much cheaper stove that does not do this, nor does it have the thread play to the same extent.
It sounds like Soto's return process is not great, but maybe I'll give it a shot.
Thanks again.

JimboJonesre: inconsistent flame control... it's just a symptom of the stove not having a pressure regulator. as the gas evaporates, it cools the canister significantly and drops the gas pressure. it's not defective. For more money, the windmaster stove has a pressure regulator that will keep the flame consistent and get the last dregs of gas out of the stove. For what it is, the Amicus is a great stove.

GregGreavesI think you've not read my comment. The flame control is very clearly nothing to do with the temperature or pressure of the canister and everything to do with the valve. Temperature would not explain why the flame rises and falls as I turn the handle x number of turns. A misshapen valve would.

JimboJonesI never returned mine, because Soto's return process seemed like a pain in the ass. Make sure to leave a post if you had any luck.
