So I got the Sennheiser HD6xx (HD650) and was looking for a dac amp combo that I could also do a modmic attachment to it and use my headphones when playing games online. That way I can get rid of my other "gaming" headphones that are just horrible and that I'm only using them for the microphone feature. So I was looking at the Sound BlasterX G5 and the fact I can do that on this and connect it to my game system makes me want to buy it, but how does this compare to other dac amp combo's that don't have a mic input for the same price? Is there a cheaper option that's somewhat on par with this?
So my question is; would it be better to get say ASUS Strix Wireless vs this plus a pair of currently undecided headphones if games are my main focus?
SiranKari
definitely buy a good pair of studio headphones allong with your amp+dac, personally I use the beyerdynamic dt 990 pro 250 ohm paired with the mayflower arc amp+dac (I'm a console gamer)
So this is advertised as being console compatible, but when I use it with my Xbox it does not detect my microphone. Is this an issue with my Xbox or the g5?

Hey @Haloruler64 - The holiday weekend in there didn't help transit time... hope you receive it shortly!
KatieA
Absolutely. I don't mind the wait, it comes with the (Massdrop) territory. I got it today! Haven't had a chance to test it, had to run to work.
How much better is the 7.1 virtual surround on the G5 compared to the 5.1 virtual surround on the Sound Blaster Z?
OK i joined this drop, now i only need a good headphone :v ... Please Massdrop HD6xx will be nice again
Anyone know how long the included USB cable is? Trying to figure out if I need to buy another one that can reach my PC, which sits below and next to my desk.
IlluminatiTriangle
About 130 CM apparently
Would this be an improvement over my on-board Creative Sound Blaster CA20k-based sound card?
Mufaaf
This would be using this the latest versions of all of our algorithms (processed on the unit itself). The virtual surround is 2 generations ahead of the CA20K based surround.
waaaay cheaper than anywhere else on the internet ive found, have a soundblaster z card in my pc and quite happy, but the soundblaster 3di software on my laptop is a headache and a half so hoping i can do away with it and run this little bad boy instead.
What about the frequency bandwith ? Expecially the lower frequencies. I couldn't find any information. Or is this a dumb question for a DAC ? I'm not very adept in this topic.

I'm asking because i have bought the Fidelio x2. The Frequence bandwith should be 5 - 40.000 Hz as per their datasheet. But if thats a normal Bandwith DAC's can handle then it's fine. Thx for your fast response.
Insanatix
very few headphones can do a convincing 20hz (with both level and fidelity), this kind of headphones are mainly orthodynamic.
You shouldn't look at datasheet, but rather at measurements: http://www.innerfidelity.com/images/PhilipsFidelioX2.pdf Well, in fact, even measurements are complex at 20hz, and there's quite an error margin at these levels.
When reading measurements, don't forget to remember human measurements as well :) See how human datasheet is not that good in the sub-bass region ;)

2 questions when would this ship? And will this output 7.1 surround in all apps with Windows 10. Because I know with some dacs in Windows 10 the driver forces the audio to be 2 channel unless the app supports surround sound. I would like to have surround sound in all apps.

Sorry I'm a newbie, just joined this drop for my first amplifier, since it is really cheap compared to Canada where you have to pay over 200 dollars
greatex
The G5 appears to Windows as a 7.1 surround device and receives all 7.1 streams for virtualization.
What is the difference between this and virtual 7.1 amp software?
TimeLemon
With the G5 all of the processing is happening on the actual device itself versus being processed by the host (CPU). Our sound cards are the only sound cards on the market where audio is processed by our multi-core DSP. All others are using codecs which require your CPU to handle the audio processing.
Is this better than an Astro Gaming Mix Amp?
Voddy
From what I hear, almost anything is better than the Astro MixAmp in terms of sound and mic quality.
Although I would like to know if it can directly replace a MixAmp in terms of functionality on a console.
Voddy
I have both the Astro Mixamp TR, and the G5. The G5 sounds much better for anything coming from the PC. The only issue is that the G5 does not process Dolby surround from a console, you will only get stereo (though very nice stereo) using this with a console.
Hello,
Could anyone tell what advantages would this sound card provide compared to my Sound Blaster Omni? I realize it has a better noise ratio, but that's all info that I could find.
Thanks!
TeribleGramar
The largest difference is that the Sound Blaster Omni surround is an audio interface which uses host based processing. So in short it's relying on your CPU to process the audio and then it passes that audio through it's headphone amp /dac, etc.
The G5 is a hardware accelerated device. This means that the audio processing will be occurring on the G5 unit itself instead of your CPU. So any effects or enhancements you enable (like virtual surround on headphones or 2.1 speakers) will not hit your CPU and be processed on the G5.
DigitalRonyn
Thank you!
However I have a second question. After spending some time reading reviews and opinions, I noticed that G5 uses different software than E5/Omni. I could not find anywhere any info if G5 supports noise reduction and other features like E5/Omni: http://d2rormqr1qwzpz.cloudfront.net/photos/2013/04/15/47501-sbx_screen2.jpg Is there a way to access such settings with G5 instead of very basic menu like this: https://jedson3614.files.wordpress.com/2016/06/capture7jpg.jpg?w=660 It's kind of a deal breaker for me. Sound card looks very nice, but if I have to take compromises then it's a no-go and I should wait for E5 sale.

Thanks again!
For those who were curious like myself, this is not a portable dac/amp based on my research (thanks google). It does not contain an internal battery meaning you cannot travel and listen, as it requires direct connection to be powered on. This appears to be a downgrade from the E5, as it doesn't contain a few of the accessories and perks such as the bluetooth. The G5 is more centered around gaming and personally I am just waiting for the E5 to drop down to a discounted price as it seems like a better value.

I've never thought of that. Do you think it has a high battery drain?
Modz
it will probably drain a lot if yo use at high gain
how would this compare to the FiiO - E10K Olympus USB DAC and Headphone Amplifier?
totoicio
This is much more powerful and versatile than e10k. More output power, has optical & usb input, mic input and hardware processing & equalization.
totoicio
As Sagar notes the G5 is an AMP / DAC + DSP. You can enable / disable the DSP however you'd like.
I have a Sennheiser PC 363D headset for my computer right now will this sound card be a good upgrade if I'm not planning on upgrading my headset? I am getting a Blue Yeti to use instead of the mic on the headset. Is this worth it? With the USB port on this card will it be able to take the sound from the Blue Yeti mic or is that port just a pass through port?
I currently have the HiFimans 350's and use the onboard sound of my ASUS maximuims hero 8, would I see improvement if i used this? edit: and can I have two headsets plugged into this? I have a mod mic on the 350, than I also have steelseries 650 which i also want to plug into this at the same time
Is the Sennheiser GSX-1000 is worth it`s price, or should i take one of the G5? I want to have something for gaming and musik. Up to now i don't have special headphones, but if i own a headphone-amp, I will buy something like : hd650, dt990, dt 880, fidelio x2.

I am interested in the GSX-1000 but the price really kills it.
I would go with the G5. The GSX1000 is expensive and isn't powerful enough to juice any of the high-end headphones. The sound quality on it is great but I really doubt it will be better than the G5.
Does USB audio in/out and optical in/out would work in Linux ? I doesn't care about drivers, dsp effects, line in/out and hp out... Does every digital inputs and outputs are rated for 192khz/24bits and works simultaneously ? (yes, my question is about using all 4 simultaneously :D)
@DigitalRonyn: Why wouldn't it work on a recent android phone supporting UAC 2.0 ? What's the input USB chip ? I guess it's a cmedia ?
Any chance these will ship sooner than almost aonyh from now?
Any chance these can be shipped quicker?
Can I plug this up to my phone and carry it around all day? I use a pair of hd8 DJ's as my daily driver and I'm wondering if this will run with a galaxy or I need a battery. Also the Creative Sound Blaster E5 says it has Bluetooth and NFC so would that be a better deal for phones?
Shlushii
I'd recommend the E5 for this use case. What you're describing is exactly what the E5 was designed for.
DigitalRonyn
Awesome thanks
Getting these to power my HD 800. Sure hope they sound good hahaha. Yes I know people are going to say I'm not doing justice to my phones but this is a temporary thing while I go place to place trying out a proper dac and amp I'll finally settle with.
CynicalReindeer
They will sound awesome. I can't tell you how many people have been blown away by the E5 and G5 when we've been at Headfi events or trade shows. We often get asked why we aren't charging more for our amps / dacs by that crowd since people become skeptical of the quality of lower priced products when it comes to critical listening. We come from the PC side of the world where price point is definitely a thing...the audiophile world price points are more...fluid.

Unfortunately, this particular situation you are mentioning with the USB mic won't work. The USB mic would be recognized by Windows (or whatever OS you are running) as it's own device and the G5 wouldn't have access to it.
Not to mention many of his reviews (from what I've seen) tend to be volume biased and based on quick switching without accurate volume matching rather than any sort of critical listening. As usual for this sort of thing YMMV. Getting the products out there to be seen and discussed is great but people shouldn't take any review as definitive.
I only own the G5 and not the E5. I know a major difference between the two is the E5 has a battery where the G5 doesn't. The G5 also has the scout mode in addition to the other programmable dsp modes.
Here is a good forum post describing the differences. http://www.head-fi.org/t/792627/what-will-the-sound-blaster-g5-do-that-the-e5-wont

It does a great job. I speak from personal experience, not just a work one ;)
I've used the G5 with 650's, AKG-7xx and Mr.Speakers Ether C's (my headphone collection), all of which have their own fickleness to them (not necessarily power related, but each one of these has it's own set of needs) and it works very well with all of them.
I love it for my audio technicas!
How does this compare to the E5 in terms of quality?

You can actually use it around with a portable power bank, but only will be allowed to use the amp, I asked creative company
Very well then, I guess I will have to join the drop, since I don't really need the "mobile" features since it's going to be used primarily for my PC :) Thanks.
