WinstonWoofThey're different classes of headphone. The M50x is closed and bassy. This is open and balanced/neutral.

WinstonWoofATH M50X aren't even close to the HP100... Why would you even compare? The M50 are way to much hyped in here..

iKnowThingsI am not a headphones 'expert' and simply wanted peoples opinions.
For somebody who 'knowsthings' your post has a distinct lack of useful information.

WinstonWoofWhat more information do you need? The m50's are a closed monitor that is on a different level than these. It would be like comparing a fridge to a dishwasher.

tyler555A little more information than "aren't even close" and "Why would you even compare".
This is providing no useful information at all. You may as well say "OMG you n00b!!111!!" It's not helpful or constructive.
All I know is that they are in a similar price range.
Stillhart however did give a useful reply as to some of the differences that was useful to me and I am sure other that are not self proclaimed headphone experts.
Care to explain what closed monitor headphones are and why they are on a different level to these?

WinstonWoofwow, i thought i would be bored but this was entertaining.
Winston Churchill, if you have further doubts about HP 200 why don't you head down to my post with 5 reviews on it and just read through. It won't have any related to M50x's though since its a closed headphone.

SilverstrikeThanks Silverstrike, I have read the reviews, but still as a non audiophile, I still don't get why closed headphones considered so radically different to an open. How does closing the back of the cans affect the audio experience so drastically? Are the speakers and drivers constructed differently in closed vs open?
From what I have learned this is probably not for me, I want to increase my audio experience for when at work, but also I have to work in a busy office environment, so sound isolation (both for me and others around me) is important. Thus I think I will go for the MX50x with a DAC / amp.
Again, i'm a non audiophile, just asking for basic information. Not sure why this is so entertaining...

WinstonWoofOpen headphones create sounds that are more natural, like how a instrument is played in an open area, also they let individual sounds separate a bit more. Although this can make some headphones sound tinny. Being open it will leak in/out sounds, so they are suited for indoor/private listening. Conversely, closed headphones usually have a more hard hitting and fuller sound but at the cost of sound detail. Also, being closed they're less likely to leak sound.

WinstonWoofIt's simple: the cups of closed headphones form a barrier to air. With so little space for sound to travel (and nowhere for it to bounce), you aren't going to get a chamber hall feeling unless the source has some drastic sound manipulations. That's why people use words like 'in-your-face' or 'intimate' to describe in-ear monitors and closed headphones.
Open or semi-closed headphones on the other hand usually have vents to allow air into the cups. Semi-closed headphones usually have a porous foam pad stuck right inside the vent to limit the amount of air passing through.
For the workplace, I would recommend semi-closed headphones. They have enough isolation so that the person beside you shouldn't be able to hear your music (unless you turn it up a lot), and there's enough air for you to notice when someone's talking to you.

WinstonWoofPlease, it wasn't that you said or did something which was amusing. Sorry if it felt that way. It was entertaining cuz a bit of scuffle broke out for something insignificant and minor when all was being discussed was general info. The focus went totally off grid. Why are we so on the edge these days?
Regarding difference between closed and open, imagine a drum which is closed on both ends another which is open from one end. Do you think they would sound the same? The one which is closed from both ends will sound deep but almost muffled. While the one with one end open would not sound do deep but it will resonate clearly and freely. Which do you think will sound the most natural? The one with one side open would sound more natural, open and clearly because it can 'breathe' easier.
The same logic applies to open back and closed back headphones. One is more natural and clear and the other more intimate and bassy.
Hope this helped you. I was a non audiophile too some months back but learnt with the kind help from fellow Massdrop'ers. Everyone's here to help.

wotcherThanks for the detailed explanation.
Could you recommend a good semi-closed for less than $200?

WinstonWoofI use my HP100 at work. They're fully closed, not semi-closed. They're fantastic headphones and totally recommended. There's a new version out now, the HP150. They're almost the same so if you can find an HP100 for cheaper than the HP150, I'd say snag it.
Check out head-fi for some good reviews of the HP100/150.
