Let's face it, watch, a definitive "humble brag" and obvious social status display to reinforce conspicuous consumption.
Why would someone want to buy a low-end piece that is niche and because discounted price is beyond me. A used Submariner speaks a lot more.
On display, go either very high end (luxury brand, top notch brand recognition, Rolex etc) or very low end (like $10 Casio). Mid range piece without mod and not common (too expensive to mod, too niche to get recognized) will have hard time to find justification to wear it.
Of course, if you are a got-to-catch-them-all collector, that is entirely different story.

erichung1218I feel almost exactly opposite to this comment. I don't buy watches to brag...indeed, if someone recognizes my brand of watch, I feel a bit embarrassed. I intensionally buy watches that are either not easily recognized (Speake-Marin) or can easily be written off (Seiko) because I don't want my watch to represent a brag, humble or otherwise. I guess I'm more of a WIS than someone who wants accolades for their watch...

GalaxyGuy I agree with you 100% @Galaxy Guy. Why wear a mass-produced watch that everyone and their mother has (and every one will wonder is a fake, anyway?) when you can wear something that's been designed and built by a master craftsperson, is unusual and (maybe better still) won't be a target for theft and bling-seekers?

erichung1218"humble brag" and "social status"? Maybe for some. For others, we appreciate the complexity and craftwork that goes into the design and building of a precision mechanical timepiece, especially one that does things a little differently than the typical ones you see on every wannabe poseur and humblebragger on the street these days. Maybe that's what sets the men apart from the boys.
And yes, perhaps a used Submariner says a lot more than the PSM, but the important thing isn’t how much (or how loudly) your watch speaks; it’s what it says. To me,the message the Rolex conveys isn’t a particularly flattering one.

erichung1218So In your opinion brand recognition is everything, and if you can't afford a 8000$ rolex you're a peasant and everyone who wants a mechanical piece because loves mechanical watches and can spend under 5000$ (more than 2 entire months of work for a lot of people) you better go with a Casio.
Calling a Speake-Marin Low end watch really shows your snobbery. If it's not in house it's low end? And what's the problem of a low end brand if it's low price? Isn't value a good proposition?
People that wear a watch to be recognized is people that don't love watches, just loves the sense of luxury and power associated with it. This is a watch community, we can have different opinions, but your opinion seems to gravitate towards not liking watches at all. I get you can prefer a rolex than a doxa, oris aquis or any other, but no one who likes watches will say they're not worth it, go for a Casio instead.
