Am I the only one thinking the term "button-down" polo is an oxymoron?

RayFWhy so? The collar has the button-down construction. How else would you distinguish it from a regular polo shirt?

GuglielmoWhy would would you? You could put six tires on a car but that wouldn't (in and of itself) improve it's appearance or performance--and it would still be a car. One doesn't reinvent the wheel by simply adding another one.

RayFMaybe people wanted to get the collar roll of a typical oxford cloth while wearing a pique weave garment and short sleeves...Hence, the birth of the button-down polo. Not seeing the oxymoron here. Men's style is fluid. Trends are idiotic, but stylish garments aren't.

RayF"Button-down" refers to the collar buttons, while "button-up" refers to the buttons on a dress shirt that you're probably thinking of.

GuglielmoYou think I get angry every time I see someone wearing silly clothing? Hell no--I enjoy a good laugh! The more seriously they take themselves, the funnier they are. Guessing you're a riot!

RayFI thought the first polo shirts were actually button downs to hold down the collars during polo play? What's the oxymoron?

TheSmallPotatoGuessing you dont actually play polo?
Years ago cattle were driven to market in huge Cattle Drives. Later, the rail roads used Cattle Cars to move the herds to market. Today they use the internet.
Don’t follow the herd—don’t be cattle.

RayFThen why are you wearing a polo shirt? You should be wearing a T-shirt made of tech fabric. Most of the items we wear have historical purposes.

TheSmallPotatoMy comments were about marketing and those who are the target of that marketing (which tends to mean, those who fall for it).
History isn't the problem--the problem is people who don't realize history was here before them.
If you mean most of the items we wear have historical roots, that's true--very little is new--save the new people who think "it's" new.
You're not one of them, are you?
