@spunoutdesigns Well, I got my top, it's lovely and spins great, but I received the wrong one. I dropped for the blue flamed, and got regular SS. 😞
I opened a ticket and asked how to return it to get the one I want (I absolutely love blue flamed SS, but I would not have bought the regular SS one because I have the budget top from Etsy), I'm still waiting on the Massdrop customer service to decide what to do.
I'm in Canada and because of the lower dollar value, every bit counts. I'm wondering if it's worth it to upgrade to ruby for $8; i.e. will I feel a difference using the top, or is it just an aesthetically pleasant upgrade valued by only the most die-hard top collectors?
@spunoutdesigns Just making sure; this is the 'upgraded' version of your Etsy sold "Precision Stainless Steel Spinning Top Flamed Colour"? I ask 'cause I was just on the verge of ordering that one (with ruby bearing) in the past couple of days.
BobrazThis one is completely different then the budget top on etsy. Both are great tops. The sceptre has more design elements to it. The budget top is more of a minimalistic design.
VikramKrishnanIf you’re wondering, see my photos below. I have the Stainless Steel one and it does indeed look like the photos supplied in the drop page.
Oh wow! How disappointing to see this new drop doesn’t include the Copper version. I bought my SS Version a few months ago with the intention of getting the Copper one when they came to MassDrop again.
Boy, I hope this top is not at ‘end of life’ like the Multnomah just experienced. 🤔
My Stainless Steel w/ Ruby tip is due to arrive his week. 🎉
And here it is! A couple of observations: It's smaller than I imagined. On the other hand, it's spin is rock solid. So any fears that all of the facets would create instability are unfounded. I did hope that they would give the top a bit of sparkle as it spin. Unfortunately, that was not the case. Still, a beautiful piece nonetheless.
I really would have preferred getting the Copper one, but… I've got so many Brass and Copper tops now that it seemed only fair to start getting a few SS ones for the sake of diversity. Got the SS Multnomah coming as well.
LOOK: This brass/ruby top is really beautiful and extremely well polished. It's not only about the carvings on the side or the high quality of the material. I recommend looking at the fine details with a magnifying glass in order to fully appreciate the high precision work. I could say it's my most beautiful one-piece top. On this point, it beats the famous Lambda.
DESIGN: Obviously, the design is inspired from the Lambda, but there are many differences (in addition to the carvings): in spite of having the same 1'' diameter and the same height, Sceptre looks thinner because the main disk has more material cut out from the upper and lower corners; both upper and lower sides of the disk central part are slightly hollowed; the bearing ball is smaller; the upper knurled part of the spindle is thicker; for some unknown reason, the spindle is not hollowed in its full length and the ruby is not visible from above. As a result of all these small differences, the look is significantly different from Lambda.
PERFORMANCE: I get only 7:55 minute spins, while I get 10:08 with Lambda brass/ruby (on the same cheap 3x mirror). This is due in part to the thicker spindle (it's beautiful but, as I feared, it's less efficient for providing high rpm at the start) and in part to a less good distribution of mass: less mass near the rim, more mass on the upper part of the spindle (the global -3g is unlikely to have any effect).
Spinning is very stable, with wobbling in only the last 40 seconds. The carvings on the rim do not induce any flutter.
NOTICEABLE: When spinning, the carvings on the rim make it look softer.
SUMMARY: I'm very happy with this high quality top and I'll buy a copper or flamed stainless steel version if the drop is re-activated.
NOTE: I also have the "basic" flamed steel top from this shop (bought on Etsy). When spinning, its milled rim makes it look as if it had two separate disks. It has longer spin times and it's beautiful also. I highly recommend both tops.
