Originally released in 1997, the Native 5 is arguably Spyderco’s most ergonomic folder. The handle features two prominent curves: one a finger choil for choking up, the other further down for finger placement when tackling more strenuous tasks Read More
I finally pulled the trigger about 5 minutes ago on this. I've been dodging it for a long time, but I had to take care of business this time. It's just too beautiful, and the idea of never getting the chance for a new one again messed with my head. I was never a lockback kinda guy, but lately have gained a liking for them. I have a Manix 2 and that will always always be my work knife and best companion...besides my dog, anyway.
I just had to get this this time. Yeah. I'm an ass, but at least I'm gonna be an ass with a pretty freakin knife I've paid for with money I don't have. Hungry? Nah.....I ate yesterday!
CaptainOfDaveI was about to be a different guy in the same boat as you. Except I forgot and fell asleep and forgot to join, did it ever make it to the $189 mark?
SeadonkeyLoveYeah. It did!
I'm sorry you missed it. I was actually surprised it made it. Looked like they needed a bunch more to qualify when I decided to go for it. Figured I'd be stuck at the 199. About 8 minutes later, I got a notification that the 189 was unlocked. Didn't think it would happen. I'll take it!
I'm sorry you missed it, dude. I know what it's like to fall asleep at key times!
BenzoBlade HQ hasn't had this knife in a couple of months. So their price really isn't relevant. I'm not sure why everyone always references that price. The knife is wonderful though I'm very happy with it.
PhillF I’ve referenced that because that’s what I paid for it from them. I didn’t actually go check to see if it was in stock. Yes you are right, it is a great knife.
I think they up charge you based on the origin stamp. Have a couple spyderco' they are nice but there certainly is a smugness held by their owners like prius drivers.
I think you missed the whole smugness reference to Colorado and south park. Like most spyderco owners you take being a part of the club way too seriously. I said i own a couple, I'm aware of the quality. As stated before by others this knife is available cheaper with free shipping from blade hq. I don't see why your political stance is relevant.
Not sure what politics has to do with country of origin TBH. Spydeco has a premium since they are made in USA using US Steels, their tolerances are tight enough to where it warrants something of a premium.
That being said, Chinese manufacturing has come a LONG way in recent years and some of their offerings are near/as nice as anything Spydy puts out. I'll usually go out of my way to buy domestic, but when you're getting an IDENTICAL product for 1/3 the money it's harder and harder to make that argument. (Not to mention all the German and Japanese manufacturers :O)
I guess what I'm trying to say here is if you want to buy American - Great, but to say that US products are universally better is kind of a mistake now that we live in a globalized society.
There have been so many Spyderco knives that I was interested in, but end up having that dumb lack-back style lock; rather than a liner or frame lock. I'm normally not a Spyderco fan because they're usually garbage plastic knives from Asia with a premium price. But when I am into the looks of the knife, and they're not the traditional crappy Zytel handled knives, they've got the lock-back style lock. Just can't win.
I almost paid near "retail" for this knife a few years ago, ended up with a C.R. large Inkosi instead. Joined this drop and then cancelled the transaction. Now I'm back in. I fear this will become my EDC.
Weird.. suggested this one in a poll here, and ended up just buying it from BladeHQ last month.. was $169 and included a $20 gift card. The model's been discontinued, so I doubt I'd ever find that good of a deal again. It's just a very beautiful and well-made knife, and even at $185, the price really isn't too bad in comparison to other USA-made Ti folders (there's actually not a lot to choose from in that price-range). Unfortunately, I think this knife maybe looks a little too nice, so I've been reluctant to even carry it for everyday use.. which is why I bought it in the first place =/
Feels like it provides a decent enough grip to me, but I've noticed that this and many other Ti items I own have almost a "greasy" smoothness to them (not sure if it's anodizing, PVD coating, or just the amount of polish). The machined sunburst isn't very deep, but that, along with the grooved finger choil seems to help a little (though for some reason, I often find myself gripping the knife further back, with my index finger in the finger groove of the scales) . Very comfortable knife to hold and still feels secure in the hand
MaxwellDemonicehhhh, hit me up at the end of this drop - If I caved and got in on this one, I've got a G5 in black I'd be willing to resell. Otherwise, I'll be using that one :D
